water temp gauge hookup

I've searched and couldn't find a straight answer. I bought a mech. water temp gauge, and wanted to know where would be the best place to tap it. On older mustangs you can simply switch out and use the autometer sender and it'd run fine. Does the ecu need the stock water temp sender, or can I hook in the autometer one in its place?

And if I can't use the stock location, where is a place to use? There's no vfaq and I had a hard time trying to find pics on where exactly to plug it in.

Almost every 90+ vehicle with an ECU, including DSMs, needs to see the water temperature. Without it, you'll always run in open loop mode because the ECU will think your car's not warming up.

Well I was referring to the foxbody 5.0 mustangs, they have two senders. The ECU uses the one on the radiator, so you can use the aftermarket one in its place.

Is there a place nearby to plug in the aftermarket sender?

Gotcha. Some of the early 4.6's, including mine, also have that second sender....

AFAIK, there's only one temperature sender on the 4G63. I have no idea if there are any bosses on the block for another sender.

For what it's worth, there are adaptors available that will accept the probe that go in-line with your radiator hose. I have one made by Greddy, but don't know where you could get it as I picked it up second-hand. I do remember seeing them made by other manufacturers as well, but don't remember them either

thanks, I'm gonna try and find one. Hopefully someone else will chime in w/ pics of where they tapped theirs, I haven't been able to find any.

you have to tap it at the thermostat housing ...theres two of them ...use the one in the front right side....make sure to get a universal thermo gasket from lappens.....
