Water pump pulley on backwards?

Been a while since I've worked on DSMs, but my alternator belt has been shredding lately (after blowing the alternator fuse a couple of times...). Upon inspection, the belt is definitely experiencing a ridiculous amount of deflection. Looks like the outer water pump pulley might be on backwards? Can someone confirm/take a picture of their water pump pulley?

You are correct, The outer pulley is on backwards. The dished part should be facing in to the engine.

yes flip it around it should fix your problem's. how did you do that if you dont mind me asking?

It looks like I'll hafta remove one of the engine mounts to get decent access to the pulley? Tried to do it with the motor mount on but there doesn't seem to be enough room to even remove the pulley if we were to get the 4 bolts off

Have fun, remove the motor mount and jack up the engine to get access to it. It definitely sucks.

you may have to take the water pump off to fix the pulley. deff no room down there!!!

I just got done replacing a crank sensor on my car and its actually pretty easy to do all this....Dont let everyone fool you its easy

1st, you should have some ratchet wrenchs handy...they are a life saver in areas like this...I'll us the acronym RW for them in the later lines...

2nd, put a 3/4 inch socket on a 1/2 inch drive ratchet and put it on the crank bolt...and get a 10mm socket and unbolt the a/c line(you know the big one right there in the way ...just move it to the otherside of the timing cover it'll stretch and bend a bit...

3rd, use 10 mm RW on 1 or 2 bolts on the water pump pulley(can probably get to 2 at a time)and loosen them.

4th, turn motor slightly with the 1/2 drive with 3/4 inch socket some

5th, loosen other 2 bolts on water pump with RW

6th, loosen the power steering pump and alternator to allow slack on the belts...

7th, Remove driver side motor mount (optional but very very highly recommended)
Put jack with a piece of wood under the motor and jack it up to relieve some weight off the mount...
2 17mm nuts and 1 14mm bolt hold it to the motor and 1 17 mm bolt goes through the mount...
Remove mount...and jack motor up some for easier access to pulleys/bolts

8th, use RW and spin the water pump bolts to loosen them and take them off....

9th, Flip your pulley

10th, put everything back together in opposite order...

If you take your time and your garage is organized this should take you no longer that 30 minutes tops...I did up to step 5 went in got a drink, came out step 8, back in for another drink, back out, then down to step 4, took a piss, back out, and done... took me 30 minutes to do all the above

Took a little more than 30 min (clearance in the 2gs suck), but got it done! One trick I found was to hold onto the bolt with the O-style wrenches and just spin the water pump pulley to loosen the bolts

Motor mount wasn't bad at all since I dropped the new motor in recently

Another way of keeping the pulley still is to take a deep well socket and go thru the power steering pulley hole and leave on the bolt. That keeps it from turning and you can break the bolts loose on the wp pulley.

I just walked out to my car and looked you have it on right! be sure you dont switch the belts up

I do not know if anyone has ever used this trick, but i always remove the driver side Headlight and stick my arm through there to reach the 4 10mm bolts on the pulley. Ive used this method and was able to remove and install pulleys without taking out motor mount.
Made the job 100x easier.

Oh ya! When the pulley is on proper the belts edges are then about 1/8" apart. When backwards you can sight down the belts and see the pulleys are obviously not lined up.

Taking the mount off takes a whole 5 minutes at the most. I don't see any reason to pull the bumper, and pull the headlight to get around that. I can probably have the mount, belts and pulley off before you even get the headlight out.

I forgot i had modded my headlight to come off with 3 bolts.
In that case I agree, pulling mount would be easier.

so just to CLARIFY - the smaller pulley goes on first with the dished part facing inwards towards the engine, the outer bigger pulley on 2nd with the flat side inwards to the engine, dished part facing outward?

The cup part of the inner fits into the cup part of the outer.
