Tearing down my 7bolt for a rebuild. It had an overheating issue, low compression and several oil leaks. This is what the block looked like when I removed the water pump. Is the block toast or is it supposed to be like this?

It looks fairly normal to me. There is a small spot where it looks like the impeller from the water pump actually contacted the block, which is never good. However, it doesn't look like it will affect the sealing surface of the water pump itself, which is what really matters.

Clean up the block surface with a scotchbrite pad or something similar, and make sure there are no serious imperfections where the water pump sealing surface would contact the block. If you have a machinist's rule/straight edge, you can make sure there's no warpage (which is fairly uncommon in that area). Otherwise, aside form being dirty, the block looks fairly normal overall.

When you install the water pump, coat the gasket with Permatex copper spray-a-gasket or something similar. This will help to seal any imperfections that may be left over after you clean the block surface.
 
It looks like ones ive seen scuff it up clean the bolt holes out and clean it good then install the gasket and you should be all good.
 
I was concerned that the gouge from the impeller might affect the flow. The gouge is almost 1/8" deep, but sealing surface is unaffected. This is my first 4g63 build, and I didn't want to get a bunch of parts if the block was junk.

I happen to have found a spare 6 bolt just in case.
 
Looks like a water pump lost a bearing and the impeller chewed the block a touch.

Like the rest, clean it and roll on.
