98eclipseRS, I officially dislike you because of your suggestion to extend the harness on that front fuse panel and move it to the cabin. ;)

I'm currently rewiring my car and it is a total pain. Guys, my engine, body, and chassis wiring harnesses are completely stripped apart and we're talking about dozens of wires that need to be individually rerouted and cut to length. Major, major project. I've rebuilt my tranny, engine, and installed a cage in the car and I can say that this is the most complex project yet. Definately don't attempt this unless you are extremely organized, have a very good reference for the stock wiring diagrams (such as the DSM CD), and can withstand hours of cutting, labeling, stripping, soldering, and shrink wrapping wires.

On the plus side though, I can say that this is going to clean up the engine tremendously in addition to removing many pounds of unneeded copper from the car. I'm taking the time to de-pin the harnesses with unused wires, replace all power and ground wires (the power wire from the alternator was pitiful), and generally do all the extras that are needed to make this a very complete peice of work.

^^^haha I knew someone would embarc on this project, we did it to my friends z28 because the wiring in the engine bay in those things is horrible. It was quite an ordeal to say the least BUT the look of it now is more than great looking. We will be doing this to my car soon as well now that it has started to rain and my car is going to stay in the garage.

Would taking the emissions out of a car affect it in any way besides not being able to pass emssions tests? i dont want to screw it up in any way

If you cap off what needs to be caped off then no, I know if you unplug the actual sensors on a 2g you will throw a cel but the drivability of the car is not changed.

I would focus on actually cleaning stuff rather than removing/relocating it. You will be suprised hhow much different your engine bay will look if you spend a bit of time re-routing wires, zip-tying stuff, and then just making everything is nice and clean. THis will make it look like there is not as much stuff under there and you dont have to lose options such as cruise and PS and AC.

i've got an 90' TSI AWD and i removed both the a/c and p/s. after awhile i had to put the p/s back on. it just got to be an pain in the ass. if your car is an daily driver i would leave it on. just my opinion. have fun

Eh...its not for everybody, if you switch over to a manual steering rack it isn't that bad unless you are in a parking lot.

my tsi is going to be a track/occasional street car, and i really want to remove the ps.. what rack do you use to do that? also will a rack form another make of car possiably work?

i know when you remove your ps belt its a bisnatch to steer but only when your stopped. when driving it isnt all that bad.

someone needs to make a vfaq while rewireing their car. it would make life eaiser for the rest of us who want to do it(me)

thanks
this project is not nearly 'universal' enough to be vfaq capable. There would be hundreds of steps such as, "take the white wire with the black stripe and reroute it along the desired path, shorten to the proper length and reconnect it to the original wire you snipped it from". And that's oversimplifying things quite a bit. In all reality most of the wires are interconnected, intertwined, and just plain tangled in a messy copper orgy of confusion and deceit. Damn this cruel car and it's seemingly easy 'clean up' projects.

it would be benificial to wright a vfaq with the basics tho explaining the basics on which route you went wiht the wire and what you can remove ect.. i mean ive been thinking for a while about doing this project but.. i dont know how i would reroute the injector wires to make them look stealthy. ect..

just my .02

I see what you mean, but it would still depend on where you mounted the components and what you retained in the vehicle.

For example, I still have my headlights, taillights, sidelamps, and heater, but everything else that is not needed to keep the car running is deleted. Most have kept more, but others may have less if it's a full drag car. I'm using an odyssey battery mounted in the passenger foot rest area and have relocated the fuse box to the right of the battery. Since the center console doesn't exist I've mounted the ecu so it 'humps' the shifter cables. The power transister is mounted to the vent ducting, the mpi relay is mounted to the dash cross bar as well as the turn signal relay box and some other box I'm not sure what it is.

You know what, I'm just going to post some pics in a couple days of the project on this thread (or if others would prefer I not hijack it I could start a new one). In all the confusion I haven't really kept track of how many wires I've removed but I can tell you the pile of wires taken out of the car is sizeable and definately weighs several pounds.
