I know this kid through a friend of mine and he has a 95 talon tsi with some work done to it but nothing crazy, i know he said he put a 6 bolt in with a 16g i think. stronger axles and other parts he said that can hold up to 500hp, but...the car doesnt have 500hp right now. idk how many miles are on it or if theyre are any problems with it, and he wont go below 4k. which is ridiculous, just looking at it i woudnt pay over 3k and thats if it is running perfect and nothing needs to be done to it. so how to i talk him down? i really want it.
 
I was lucky when i bought my DSM, because the guy was selling it because he had to, not because he wanted to. I would offer him lower than what you want to pay, because they always go a little above the offer and that works most of the time. Definitely pick out the problems if he trys to be a moron, but be realistic. Good luck, and remember, tell him it is a FWD, and not worth more than 3k.
 
Post some pics of the car, if the car has good compression, upgraded clutch, bolt ons, an actual MHI 16g with decent paint an interior its worth the price.
You need to figure out if the car is gettofied? wrong bolts, rigged stuff, maybe some hanging wires. do the parts seem to be put on by someone who knows there stuff?

Put the car on the lift look for oil leaks, maybe drain some of the oil to check it out for debree. If there is an oil leak, which there usually is on a dsm just make sure its nothing major try an locate where its coming from either by the rear main seal or maybe by the oil pump just look an determine if theres gunna be work in the future let the car warm up to temp and see how much oil it leaks over time.. .
Take timing belt sheild off make sure the timing belt feels tight and really try to do a compression check. take off the intake pipe check turbo for play. ALL MAINTAINANCE STUFF Check the stuff that goes bad and make sure once you get the car that your not gunna have to invest a ton of money for it to be reliable. make sure your gauges work, rpm gas gauge all that stuff.

Lastly Drive that B%$ch there is so much stuff that can go unnoted, go through all the gears up and then down each gear when slowing down, check if the car pulls to one side, with the car off check tie rods by turning the wheel back an forth without to see if there is play, list goes on my friend. I dunno I think you get the point. just be patient an take your time dont worry that your taking this guys time up.

I bought my 98 tsi awd for $2200 cdn. He was asking $3500 for it.
Stock with 140k km on it. Just over 85k miles. ;)

It had a few dings, rust on the strut towers and he busted off the radio antenna.
I offered him a stack of $100 and it was that easy.

I have since replaced most of the rusting parts on the silly east coast car. The rest is being done this winter. I have had it for almost 2 yrs as a daily driver, except for when I am down awaiting a new part or out in the field on exercise.

I have also seen a few $100 dsm's in my area. Some day soon, I am going to start to scoop them up.
