Asking to much?

I have a question.
Ive been looking now for the last few months for a turbo 1gen dsm. I want it to run well and thats about it, body shape, interior are not important as this is going to be a project car. I don't think I should have to pay more then 1300 for it. Between Auto trader, ebay and a few local dealerships I get laughed at when I say thats all I will pay. One guy went as far to say he rather drive his laser rs off a bridge then sell it for 1300 cash. One 91 awd was misfiring and didn't drive well and had 145K miles, they still wanted 3K for it!

Where should I be searching for my project?
Is it asking to much to find a car for that price in that shape?

for the amount you are looking to spend chances are pretty good you will need to buy backward(good int and exterior,with a blown or no motor).Basically you are paying for the engine if you are looking for one that is running.But good luck on your searching.

most diamonds in the ruff are bought from peopel that have broke cars and are clueless as to what the prob is.

If i was you id just look for a 1g AWD shell and put your own fresh- 6bolt in it.

I find running AWD's all the time for under 2000.

I'm not going to give up my sources, but I'll tell you this.
Don't look in places that know about the cars. And you better be prepared to drive to pick it up.

indeed, there all over the place if you know where to look. I live in ct and bargain news is a good source for me. auto trader/cars.com are bad sites (in my experience for the most part) because people put "good running" cars on there and think they are worth x amount of dollars and wont b leinant at all even in the case of the $3000 laser rs that is really worth ###### like $1500. another good spot to look is right here on the dsmtuner classafieds and dsmtrader.com.

I was in your same shoes only a month or so ago. I searched & searched with my tiny little budget & came across a 1G AWD Talon located about 4 1/2 hours from here. Guy was asking $2,000 & I talked him down to $1,500.

So I made my 4 1/2 hour trip to northern new hampshire & got the car. Trailered it home for about 5 hours & parked it in the driveway. That was over a month ago & that car is still sitting on jackstands in my driveway. Sure, it runs great, but the entire suspension, braking system, & drivetrain has to be rebuilt before I can even drive it. That includes dropping out the front & the rear subframes, sandblasting everything, Replacing all bushings & mounts with Energy Suspension parts, putting on brand new rotors, calipers, pads, & stainless brake lines, shocks/struts replaced, CV joints replaced, sway bar mounts replaced, sway bar links replaced & more!

That was a $1,500 car. so plan on spending plenty on top of the $1,500 if you want a reliable DSM.

Not all will be in that shape, but if you can find a good, running, reliable DSM for that price, consider yourself lucky. Just about all of them at that price need something.

The guy who was selling my car was asking 500 for it because he said the clutch was blown. I was waiting two days to buy it and he realized he just needed to replace the master cylinder I still bought it but for 1000. It runs great they only thing I had to do was buy a battery for it two weeks after I bought it and replace the power steering pump with one I found at pick n pull. I suggest looking at www.craigslist.com You need to realize that people on ebay and autotrader are paying for their ads so their going to try and be little basts about it. Craigslist is free and you can find great deals on there. Im about to go look at an awd with a blown motor, everything else is pristine for 500. Good Luck

I looked at a few 1g and 2g, all were owned by kids and known they were rang out. most the ranges I saw was $2,500-$3,000. I found one on autotrader with lots of pics. Looked great compared to what I have saw. I told him I wanted to come look at it. I told him on the phone I wanted to put deposit on it. I got there and car ran great, the only thing is starter crackeld. First caller and bought the car for what he was asking for, I didn't want to lose this one. $2,700. He bought new and had every single service record.

Thank you guys for the Info, That craigslist was cool but all the cars were either in cali or another country.
Any other sources that anyone is willing to give up? If you wanta keep in confidencial just pm me, Im really wanting to get this project before it gets cold out.
Theres a good running dsm here in town but man the guy just will not come down...Its a 91 awd talon, Runs well, little rough sounding, decent body with a lil bit or rust on the back fenders. it has 146K miles and a very funky two tone paint job that is all scratched up. They want 2500 for it though...I wish I had more money for this project. Maybe they will come down it its still there in a week. Its a reallys scumy lot and the guy I talked to was a total dooshbag to me.
