I accidentally broke my vss while putting my tranny back in and bought a new one. The problem is that the gear shaft is sticking out farther in the new one and I cannot figure out how to get it all the way in to install it. The picture describes the problem better than I can. Anyone know how to do it?

The new vss is from an automatic. You need to get one from a m/t. If the shaft isn't damaged on the m/t one, you can remove it and swap it into the new body.

Cool. I just got off of the phone with the Satan and they told me, for the second time now, that both the sensor and the shaft for a m/t and auto are identical. Useless.

Is there a trick to getting the shafts out?

There is a little clip that you pop out at the bottom of the plastic body. Make sure it doesn't go flying when you pull it out.

I have a similar problem except that I have an A/T sensor and I need to put it into an M/T. Can I just buy the M/T shaft and gear at the stealership?

Thanks, and yeah, the gear and shaft are one piece. It's 10-15 bucks.

For future reference...

The sensor comes separate from the shaft/gear (which come together). The sensor also comes with an o-ring and e-clip.

These are all 2g part numbers.

FWD M/T (all years), and AWD M/T 95-96::
Gear - MD746492
Sensor - MD756606

FWD A/T (all years), and AWD A/T 95-96::
Gear - MD757055
Sensor - MD756606

AWD M/T 97-99:
Gear - MD749150
Sensor - MD749149

AWD A/T 97-99:
Gear - MD760150
Sensor - MD760149

My understanding is that AWD M/T is the shortest followed by FWD M/T and A/T are the longest.

I'll measure my cable style sensor and maybe someone can tell me which gear I need to buy.

Hi there. Done with this problem man? This is really hard to fix man. I already encountered same problems as yours.

Can anyone explain why the AWD M/T 95-96 and the AWD M/T 97-99 gear and sensors are different (part numbers)?
