basically i just been looking around seen alot of threads on the VR-4. i did as much research and found its a tt engine that puts out 320 hp. is this correct? any info on this motor would be great. also jsut wondering about galants with the vr4. did they only make them for the 1st gen?

You are a bit mistaken here. The 3000GT VR-4 has a 6G72TT which is the twin turbo V-6 that puts out 320hp. It also had four wheel steering and active aero, although the aero didn't come until later model years. The Galant VR-4 has a regular 1g 6-bolt in it, but also has 4 wheel steering. They were on sale for i think 1991 and 1992, and only a few thousand were ever imported. I hope this clears things up for you.

a little. do all vr-4 come with the twin turbo? or just the 3000gt? is the vr4 in a galant a 4 cyl. or is that also a 6 cyl. is there any way to put a vr-4 into a 99 eclipse? my friend has an rs and is wanting to do an engine swap. he has the 420a. is the motor better or worse and most of all even worth it?

VR-4 stands for variable radius 4, as in 4 wheel steering. At slow speeds, the rear wheels turned to make your turning radius shorter. At higher speeds, the wheels barely turn, so now you have a larger turning radius (hence variable).

There are 2 "VR-4" cars. The Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 and the Mitsubishi Galant VR-4. The VR-4 has nothing to do with the engine. (although the VR-4 models were the performance oriented ones).

EDIT: Some more stuff....
The Galant came with a 4g63 engine, just like the ones in our cars, so swapping your 4g63 for another 4g63 is pointless.
The 3000GT came with a 6g72 engine. This is a 6-cylinder motor that WON'T fit under your hood.

EDIT AGAIN:
I see he's looking to swap out the 420a. He's better just building it OR selling the car for a factory turbo 4g63. It takes less money for more fun. Either sell the RS for funds for a GS or GSX OR keep it as a DD.

EDIT for a 3rd, and hopefully final time...
The 3si.com forum says that VR-4 stands for "Viscous Realtime 4 Wheel Drive"... I like "variable radius" better :p
Basically, no one (at least no one talking) knows what VR-4 actually stands for.

The galant vr4 is a 4g63t four cylinder, the 3000gt vr4 is a twin turbo six cylinder.

The work alone along with the money to buy the engine and install it blah blah blah would be WAY too much to do. Anything can be done for the right amount of money. If it were me, just buy a Galant Vr4. The Galant Vr4s were a 4cylinder turbo. Only the 3000GT came twin turbo. Do a search on google for an engine shot of a 3000GT Vr4 and you can see just how big that engine is. Tell your friend to just turbo his 420A or sell it and get a stock 1g or 2g gst/gsx. The eclipse is lighter and cheaper to modify.

p.s. - My fault whiteflash beat me to it when it comes to explaining the engines LOL

Galant vr4 = dsm engine, 2000 imported in 91 and 1000 imported in 92 to the usa.

3000gt vr4 is v6 twin turbo

Anything Mitsubishi with the vr4 name is awd but engines and turbo configs differ from car to car.

Also keep in mind that this was more than fifteen years ago. Many econoboxes of today can keep up with them, just as a Rabbit could make a TR-250 wonder where the hell he went. Progress.
The fad of "all wheel steering" (Nissan, Infiniti, Mazda, Mitsubishi, et al) has now moved on to "self parking".

It was common for rear-steering systems to be disabled by owners, for both reliability and handling issues.

There is a twin turbo galant tho and galant wagons.. They are produced for Europe.. Type in 99 twin turbo vr4 galant and it should pop up on google.. Also check out the mitsubishi mirage cyborg R they are neat lil cars and i guess you can swap the 4g63 in them..

My Dad bought a 3000GT VR4 new. I don't remember the year. I thought the VR4 standed for AWD or at least I know the VR4 was the only model that had it. I forgot about the active aero but it had that too. I think at 60mph or something the rear spoiler moved to improve stability at higher speed. LOL cool. The car was fast but heavy. It was very stable at high speed. 130 felt like nothing. My mom had a new 1G Talon TSI followed by a 2G GSX. I can say that the 3000GT VR4 was a quicker, faster, and more substantial car. I guess when I said I am new to DSM in another post I meant I am new to owning one myself but I have had experiences driving them years ago. I also test drove a GST once and about gave the sales man a heart attack LOL. Hey I had to see how it handled under hard acceleration compared to the AWD ;)

The service dept. at the dealership must love your family. LOL

the mirage cyborg is sick. I wouldnt take one over my GSX, but i do wish they were sold here in the states. they are very cool cars.

The AWS doesn't open until 30mph..so how does that work?

I own both a 92 TSI AWD and a 92 3000gt vr4. I never even messed with the AWS but the active aero is cool. ANd guess what both my cars dont run right now either... Might as well call my 3000gt a DSM then huh??? LOL

I wouldnt either but they are still nice...:D

Well on these systems I am not sure, but other AWS systems make the rear wheels turn opposite to the front wheels for better turning radius during parking at low speeds (30mph or less). Then when the vehicle is over 30mph, the AWS control module tells the rear wheels turn the same way as the front wheels to give it better handling for example while switching lanes. Pretty cool stuff I followed my brother once on the highway when he had his 4WS (same as AWS) prelude and when he switched lanes it looked as he hovered across I was like OMG

The mitsu mirage cyborg was never sold in the US. You would be extremely lucky to find one outside of japan/new zealand (lots of them there)/australia. BUT you can take a rear subframe from a vr4/awd 1g dsm and with a little fab work you have awd on a colt/summit/mirage. There's more than a few of these swaps in progress and a few more that are done and out driving. I just need an awd trans and clutch and then I can get started on my awd swap. :D

Sorry buddy you have it wrong dsm's were made in usa galantvr4 were made in japan 87 or 88 was the first year wernt imported to us until 91&92 so it came before the dsm. The dsm has the galant engine not the other way around and btw there were 6 additional vr4's that were imported with no badge number so the actual number was 3006 between 91 & 92 :hellyeah::hellyeah:
3000gt info is correct LOL

Actually its 3009 total for two years, no one is sure if they really exist and some numbers are duplicates of another, i have seen two 74/2000 , and its technically dsm does have our motors but usdm version, the jdm motor comes with 510cc and a small 16g iirc.

Active aero front and rear active exhaust active suspension from 91-96 then everything was changed

95-96 also came in spyder hard top convertibles

Some misinformation at the beginning of the post. VR stands for Viscous Realtime-not Variable Radius as one person mentioned. I have never been able to find out exactly what the 4 refers to, the awd or aws. I always assumed awd since that is the obvious choice.

Anyone else know for a fact which the 4 refers to?
