volts jumpping high and overheating

so the past two days when ever i drive more than 20 min. my cars volts jump to about 16 or so then drop back to around 13.5 according to my apex tt. not only that but it gets real hot, almost to the top of the gauge. im gonna check the coolant tonight and make sure the fans are turning on but the volts thing has me stumped. what do you guys think it could be?

would that cause the overheating?

No separate issue for sure. Check coolant level and or flush and replace, replace thermostat and check rad cap to see if it holds enough pressure.

ok this is weird on the way home that is like 20 miles the car acted perfectly(for a dsm) WTF

If your car isn't actually over heating ...then yes the voltage spike might cause some havoc with other electrical systems. I would have your alternator looked at for sure.
