this is a 91 tsi awd turbo (automatic) with high revs the engine seems to vibrate and lag when shifting gears. any possibilities

OK. Revised this post to remove entries that do not relate to automatic cars

vibrations can be challenging:
- check that your motor/tranny mounts are fine and that all the drivetrain nuts/bolts are torqued down.
- by lag, do you mean that you have to let the engine revs decrease before it shifts?
- does this occur in all gears? is it more prominent when shifting from one particular gear to another?
- how confident that your tranny was correctly installed?
- how confident are you that the bell housing had no issues, including the shims that align it properly?

By lag I mean it takes extra long to shift(it is an automatic)

someone told me it may be a dirty transmition filter, I will check some of the things you mentioned as well.

if after trying all options you still have the problem, then take it to a tranny shop or the dealer (yikes) and have them diagnose it only. in fact you may want to have it looked at right away. this way for the labor to diagnose the problem you will know righ away if your tranny has gone bad. if so, then you can focus on getting a used, low-mile replacement from local dismantler. some dismanntlers often have a good mechanic and purchasing the used tranny and having them install it means that they'll have no issues replacing it when/if it goes bad.
