I am doing a rebuild on a 90 6 bolt and when my machinist went to do my head he called me up and told me that he will be unable to do a valve job because he does not have the correct "bit" or something and it would cost him $300 and that is not "profitable" for him. He told me that if I can find some valves to put in it then he would take $50 off of the labor cost. Stock valves seem pretty expensive to buy new. If I have 16 good valves that are not bent can I send them out someplace to get machined and then have him put the head back together and stuff? Otherwise what is my next best option? Cams may be in the future if that at all helps for suggestions. Thanks.

I would find another machine shop to do your work. Chances are he's referring to a "pilot" which fits into the guide and locates the cutter that actually cuts the seat. The 4g63 uses a pretty standard size pilot so if he doesn't have it I would assume that he has little to no experience with turbocharged 4 cylinder performance. There is a lot of flow and power potential to be found in the valve job so don't skimp. Keep in mind that it is not expensive to ship out a head to a shop that knows what they're doing.

depends on what equipment he is using to cut/grind the seats....

Just like Jackson Auto said, he could mean the pilot, and they run appox $60 if it is a souix style, and most machines are...

or he dose not have the proper cutter bit, and the common one nowadays is the "serdi" style... and they run from $20-$50 a cutter....

so go pick up your head and find a diffrent shop, or like Jackson Auto said.. ship ot to someone who knows the 4G63 Head better than the shop your using and has the proper equipment to do it
