Doing a rebuild on a 6 bolt motor. Just wanted to see what peoples thoughts were on what to re-use on the old motor. I am trying to determine what timing components can be re used and which ones should be just thrown out even if they look to be ok.

An important thing to state is how the engine failed or why it is in need of being rebuilt as well as mileage. Most people will replace all the timing components ie: Tensioner pulley, Idler pulley, Hydraulic tensioner, Timing belt, Balance shaft belt and BS tensioner pulley (If keeping Balance shafts.)

Are you going to be building the block yourself or have a shop do it for you? also are you going to do a stock rebuild?

if i am re-using parts i make sure they are in spec before using? and the timing i would get a new belt and new tensor. And if the pulleys look bad replace them.

to tell if a pulley is bad hold the center were the bolt goes and roll it like a skate board wheel. if the bearings feels notched when u roll it i would replace it.

hope this helps.

Thanks guys. Not sure how many miles were on the motor I am getting the block and other parts from different motors. As far as the build I will be having someone helping me out that will look at the old components. I just wanted to get an idea where even if the parts look to be ok and within spec if I should grab new ones.

For the build I will be doing block 20 over, stock crank, eagle rods, forged pistons (not sure which ones yet) and a stock rebuild on the head with a valve job. New belt for sure just wondering about the other parts. I will be doing a balance shaft delete.

Manley or Wiseco are both good brands. and just make sure if u use old parts there in spec. and a balance shaft elimination is good.

if you have question pm me and i will answer them

You will save yourself a lot of money doing it right the first time. Take your engine to a reputable machine shop to check for proper clearances etc... the whole 10yrds.
I'm assuming your going forged for a few reasons, more reliability, boost and power. Don't go cheap on your tb components. IMO you should go OEM. Replace tensioner, idler pulley, water, oil pump and timing belt. You dont want anything to give in that area. ### the results are fatal. It assures you and gives a sense of comfort your engine will last. We all have future goals to meat. Once they are met, expectations and goals only get bigger! Lol. Its a drug.
