I'm replacing my valves with some new OEM ones. Is it a bad idea to run upgraded springs, retainers, etc. with my stock cams and valves? Or should I just stick to all OEM.

6bolt block, 2g head.
My goals are in the 350-400hp range.

I would deffinatly pop in some aftermarket spring/retainers. Look into the forced performance dual spring kit. Very affordable, and they will work with aggresive cams at high rpms. 400 whp is alot easier if you have cams and an extra 1000 rpms to use.

Evil eagle(jmfab) has made 50+ sub 10 second passes on oem vavles.

Okay. Will the upgraded springs have any adverse effects on my stock cams? I wouldn't be upgrading cams until next summer, at least...

Also, can I just kinda piece my valvetrain together, or do certain brands of springs/retainers, etc. only fit specific valves?

Thanks.

Shiggety sweet... just ordered:

OEM valves
Manley springs, titanium retainers, and locks
Bronze valve guides
OEM valve seals

Snagged a cometic head gasket, intake manifold gasket, and exhaust manifold gasket too since the head is coming off again.. Lame since my current cometic hg only has about 50 miles on it since the 6bolt swap..

OEM Valves are good for whatever power you make. There is not limit to them. The valves have really nothing to do with the cams. Its the springs that make the valves move.

To me I see no point in having after market springs and retainers if using the stock cams. Since power dies out around 6500rpm along with the stock intake manifold. But if you plan to upgrade your cams in the future than I would see it as plausible. The stock springs are good up to 8500rpm.:thumb:

Thanks for all the info. I will upgrade my cams sometime this coming year, along with my intake manifold. HP gains will be addicting, so I'm sure I'll keep upgrading and upgrading. This car will be with me for a really long time. Just invested about 12k and still pouring more money in! I'll just be happy once it's tuned, LOL!
