I have a 97 gst eclipse and I have a unknown sound that I need some help finding. It all of a sudden it started making this noise today when I started it up. The noise is coming from where the belt pulleys are on the drivers side. The noise sounds like a rocking/knocking sound, like as if the pulley/belt plastic cover was tapping on of the pulleys or something, but I checked for that and this isnt the case. It makes the sound for a few seconds then goes away for afew mins and comes back again and does this for as long as the cars been running. Please let me know of anything that could be causeing this to make this sound. THANKS.

it could be any # of things, its really hard to determine where a noise is coming from, especially since we cant hear it, can you post a sound clip??? A vid to determine where its coming from? Also, check your timing belt, make sure its not hitting the top cover

I'm guessing it changes frequency when you rev up the motor? Figure out where it's coming from and if you can put any pressure on the covers to see if that changes at all. Of course, do this after you pull off the top timing cover and see what shape the belt is in...

Probably your balancer pulley. I wouldn't drive it until you confirm this. It will eventually throw belts and leave you stranded.

At 62,500 miles, I just did the 60,000 mile maintence, replacing my timing belt, balance shaft belt and tensioner. Also dissconecting the ac pulley and belt for the reasons of not ever using it. And it still makes the sound. I checked all the pulleys- in good condition, the water pump looks to be in good condition- not leaking out the weep holes & still pumps out hot heat. The belt isnt hitting the cover, as it still makes sound after covers or removed. The sound changes little if any when rev-ed up. The sound is more of a squeek than a rocking/knocking sound now that I have heard it more. Coming from the middle to bottom of engine(Water pump down). I wish I could be a sound clip on here so you could hear, but I have no way of doing so. I was tossing up the idea maybe it could be the water pump, but then again it shouldnt be making a noice if it isnt leaking, putting out good heat or if pulley isnt bad. Any ideas of this happening to anyone? Please give me any ideas, suggestions or whatever possable to fix this problem. THANKS.:dsm:

Did you confirm that crank/balancer pulley is not slipping?
That would be my guess too, because the way the noise is described, it reminds me of my crank pulley problem. It was slippind like crazy and at first I though was my timing belt.
Make sure you can not move the inside part(dampener?) by hand!

I checked the pulley today and its not the pulley and I cant move the dampener. what could this be?

What you described is one of three symptoms of crank/balancer pulley failure (before complete separation0. They are:
1. Squealing, often attributed to belts.
2. Rapping/clanging sound.
3. Throwing belts.

If you haven't replaced the pulley yet, it's time. I would do it anyway. I still think that's the most likely suspect.

I just got the dealership to look at my engine a month ago ### I had a similar problem and it turned out to be a lasher/lash adjuster (i forgot the exact name ### i dint have to fix it) problem.

whats this? And were is it located? Havent heard of this thing before.

I had the same noise that you are describing. It ended up being the water pump. Even though it was working fine it would squeak. I found out by removing the belts and turning its pulley, thus recreating the noise. Try it out.

its an auto...no clutch. Iam thinking its the water pump also..its the only thing it could be...I'll have to take apart again to see if so. thanks.

I havent driven the car for some time now since I have had the problem in my forum. So I decided to go start the car yesterday and when I did there was a wierd idle like and some gauge lights stayed on so I hurried to shut off. Then I went to engine compartment to discover that the alternator belt had came off. So I had placed the belt back on and started it, ran fine. I gave it some gas, watching the pulleys to see why the belt came off in the first place and the pulley on the very bottom was moving outward towards the driver side fender. So I shut down car. So I now have a problem. What could this be and how to fix? cost? Please help me. Thanks.

Try seeing if its one of these.:thumb:

A.) your harmonic balancer is separating so you need a new one.
B.) you didn't tighten the 4 bolts down that hold the balancer on.
C.) you tightened the bolts down with the balancer cocked on the crank. or without getting the dowel through the hole. (if there is one on 2g?)
D.) when you put the pulleys back on the water pump you put them on wrong and they are miss alined with the other pulley's.

Lash-adjuster: AKA lifter. The lifter tick on DSM's is notorious, and mostly harmless. You can replace the lifters with the new revised lifters, which have larger oil passages. These are available at most DSM vendors and even eBay. Here's the VFAQ that goes into replacing the lifters: Linky

Some people have luck running Lucas Oil Stabilizer with their oil. Here's an article from the tech guide here explaining one person's experience with it: Tech Article.

Good luck.
