I looked under my car to see the extent of rust behind the fender to find out almost every metal part of under my car is rusted, the rear is worse then the front. My car seems to be holding up fine, so should i just take a wire brush to it on a free day and clear some out and then rubbercoat? or is it better getting all new part? I plan on getting new suspension later down the road so im not to worried about those parts, but there are some other parts that are pretty bad rusted that i never though of. I have pics but for some reason my computer wont let me retrive them, but ill post when i got them. So would wire brush be the bestway to go or how else should i handle this? i want to get it out of the way before something gives and my car is junk.

On more minor question, the side panels on the outside that run across the door to are falling off, what kind (or best kind) of adhesive should i use to stick them back on.

A wire brush could be just enough to get the surface rust off..Granted if the rust is only surface rust, and not about to rust through the body...Then yes undercoat it will be fine...Plastdip or a thicker rubberized coating would workout great..It's an option or not when sumone purchases a car..Mine did not have it done either but I'm also not that rusty..And the rust thats there appears to be just surface rust..

Not to thread jack or anything but I too have a little rust on my moon roof. The seal is really mest up and makes my car look like crap. How would I make it look semi decent?

Weren't you just bragging in another thread about how your car is rust free because you live in AZ? :D haha jk man, giving you a hard time.

Pictures go a long way when it comes to determining problems with rust. If you can post some up of your (and the OP) problem areas, then more guidence can be given of what can be done. Generally the rule of thumb on rust is this: get rid of all of it, or it will continue to spread.

That being said I have had good luck in the past with por15 rust treatment.

Thing about rust is that one has to think of it as "CANCER!"

We have to think about CANCER is that we, MUST remove every bit of the CANCER, but the most important issue here is to REMOVE and CONTROL the source where these CANCER outbreaks are the results.

...which is moisture that attacks the bare metal. Got any water leaks or minute cracks where moisture can creep into?

If you can cut/grind out every bit of the rust and seal the area, that's one big step that is completed so the rust can't grow back.

(I'm a twice cancer survivor, why I emphasize the word...)

On more minor question, the side panels on the outside that run across the door to are falling off, what kind (or best kind) of adhesive should i use to stick them back on.
Go to an auto body/paint supply store and get you some of that double sided moulding tape. (It's super sticky stuff, so be careful and patient with the stuff..) If you got the original moulding, you'll have to rid of the old adhesive strip to make the surface clean, and do the same on the door panel. Then you can re-lay the new strip on the moulding and adhere it back on the door panel. I had to do it as well on my Laser-one end was lifting off, thus I did as I mentioned above to put it back on.

Good luck

Well i was going to get my body rust cut out it already ate through in one spot and its ugle. And im hoping that the undernieth of the car is not rusted through, but then again all the part that are covered are holding up, so im hoping scrapping it off and sealing it will prevent further damage, i work at menards so i can get the stuff easy

here it is:toobad:

Thats actually alot of rust..But thats to be expected here in this area..I would either take all that crap off replace bushing and grind down, paint ot rubber coat..Or just leave it..

The large parts probably arent going to break on you very soon..But hows the rust on the actual underbody??That should be addressed first..unless you plan on going with new bushings anyway...

so that rust i those part i really dont have to worry about even though its that bad? i cant afford to replace them all, and its my dd so i cant take each part out and grind it down over the coarse of time. Yea i know its pretty bad, and everything under there is replaceable right? If it does eventually break?

yea bud i know what you mean, upp here by chicago we have two seasons, rust season and construction season

Run it into the ground then find a rust free/less rusty shell to swap into. IMO that's too far gone to be worth fixing.

That is why its hard to find any 1G in my area, everyone gives up on them and scraps them out. I would try electrolysis or wire wheel and some POR15. It all depends on how much free time you have and how important it is to you. I personally wouldn't let it scare me.

I love this car, and I really want to fix it right. I don't have allot of free time and it is a DD, so i cant take it apart. Money is hard to come by, I got my hours cut bad, and I'm working 2 maybe 3 days a week if I'm lucky, and that all goes to rent, bills, gas etc. I was really hoping to get this think rebuilt then built by the end of this summer, considering I'm out of school, but the work hours are not letting that happen:(

As much rust as you have it would be really difficult to get rid of it without taking it all apart. Without having alot of free time and this being your daily driver that makes it even more difficult. My suggestion at this point would be to get underneath the car and wire wheel as much as you can and use POR15 on it. Do a section everyday until you get it completed.

Would some of the part be replaceable if I just save some cash up.

I know you said that moneys tight but if you're able to.. maybe later on, look for a decent rust free/less shell and strip/prep/paint the underbody while your driving your 1g.. if you have a place to do it. There are a few people that have done it themselves here, do a search. You don't have to be an expert, it's the underbody. When your satisfied with the end results you can transplant your parts to the donor, remember it doesn't have to be a turbo donor if it doesn't really matter to you.

I'm living the college life with my parents. LOL. I live at home and there cars take up the garage, and we live in the city so there is not room for me to prop the car up for a couple days to work on it and the city really wont appreciate it in the street.

What about just using naval jelly? My mom told me to use that, it desolves pitted rust and you just wash it away (according to the directions).
