Rust issue :(

Well I got informed yesterday from my friend who is a welder and was repairing the rust on the strut tower and fire wall that my car is basically scrap. The previous owner hid the rust before by spraying a shit load of undercoating in the fender wall and u couldn't tell unless u started to peel it back. It would cost about the same to get a shell and start over again or pay him 1500 to rebuild the strut tower and the firewall. I'm just at a lost of words right now.

My opinion about this post..if you may...it is that a strut tower plays a vital role on any car. Ot is crucial to the cars handeling etc. i know that it is not me that is spending the money..but i think that you can go ahead and go for the fabrication of another strut tower. He is an experienced welder i suppose..and for that amount of money..it should be perfect...and NO RUST if you get a shell...you would hav to de assemble your current car..to the other car...that takes time....and probably if you are in low budget..u might find yourself doing it..which isnt bad...but...you know what i mean

If it is that bad I would find another shell and swap everything over. It is a pretty big job even for an experienced welder to replace the strut towers, and will likely cost you more than buying a decent shell.

^^^^what, he said. a clean shell is easy to come by. Swapping everything over and selling the scraps will probably be cheaper and take less time to fix. There's to much risk IMO in dealing with major repairs like that.

might be cheaper and safer than having it fabricated.

Its exactly what you have said guys. He is a very experienced welder and he said that the cost of him doing it would be the cost of getting a new shell. Very time consuming.. It just sucks when you spend money into fixing the car up and then this shit happens. I think I have come to the conclusion that I am going to strip all I can, sell the parts, and get a shell. Just a sad day

I've seen threads with people replacing the whole strut towers with ones from junkyards. Is that price for him to rebuild a tower from scratch?

The labor of just doing that is 1000 plus, plus his is into the firewall. That would get very expensive to fix properly.

i have a small rust spot on my strut tower as well its not bad if needed i can post a picture but are you all saying that if there is any rust on the tower is done for?

Sad story, I'd recommend picking up a new shell as well. Maybe even sell your car (with full disclosure) and go pick up another GSX (without rust of course) that costs a few hundred dollars more.

Yes, if you see rust it is probably already too late. Unfortunately the towers usually start rusting from the inside.

This was a big reason I decided to sell my old 2g awd (picture in my sig) the strut towers were pretty bad and it would have taken a lot of work to fix everything that had rust issues. It sucks but it isn't financially reasonable to keep and fix it when you could get a shell for a decent price and transfer your parts over.

I am picking up a shell this weekend Yea if you see rust on the towers its already late. Mine started there and went down the wheel well into the fire wall. The winter build starts......

I had some minor rust starting on one of my towers and when I took it in to be fixed the guy found a lot more underneath...luckily it was still fixable. Random question: What would be a reasonable price for a clean 1g shell?
