Turbonetics T3/T4 Turbo on my 1g? or my 2g?

Hey guys,

I am new to this site but not new to DSM's. I currently own 3 DSM cars. I have a 96 Mitsubishi Eclipse RST that sports a stage 2 HRC turbo kit, a 90 Mitsubishi Eclipse GST (recently obtained), and a 91 Mitsubishi Eclipse NT 1.8 POS with 220,000 miles. The 91 1.8 is my daily driver and is bulletproof.

Anyways, I recently obtained a Turbonetics T3/T4 Turbo 57 Trim in a trade of some items and some cars. This turbo is brand new and still in the box. I have done everything to all of my cars by myself with assistance only from friends so I am no dummy when it comes to an engine. The HRC kit I had was incomplete and had to fabricate much of it myself and make it work. I am a little confused on whether this turbo would be a good upgrade over my super 16g that comes with my HRC kit. It does bolt to the Hahn manifold but the manifold does not have a flange for the external wastegate I will need for the new turbo. Also, I would need to make a new downpipe. Does anybody make a manifold for the 420a with the external wastegate setup or is there somebody that can customize my manifold for the setup? Would this turbo help my 2g? I am currently only running 8 pounds of boost because I still have a stock bottom end so would it be worth it to upgrade turbos?

Would it be better to put on my 1g? This car is completely stock right now and I have plans to make it a beast on the streets. However, it seems like a much bigger job to put it on my 1g. Where could I get a manifold that bolts up to it with external wastegate setup? What all would I need to make it work on my 1g? Let me know which one would be more worthwhile to use the turbo on and how hard it actually is to put it on either one.

Nobody has any advice for me on this topic?

If I were in your position, I would sell the turbo, and use the money to mod the GS-T you just aquired. The 57 trim T3 is a great turbo, but with the amount of money you get for it, you could very easily buy most of the stage I mods listed here on DSMtuners, and run faster than you would by just bolting on the 57 trim. The 57 trim could only run at about 15Lbs. on your stock fuel system, and at that boost level, the turbo would be far out of it's efficency range. It would also spool up much later than your 14b, so any gains you get would be offset by the fact that you'd have to wait until over 3500 RPM for it to kick in. You'd also have to spend money on the manifold and downpipe, so you're already in the hole without getting any extra real horsepower.

I'd get an intake, exhaust, boost controller, boost gauge, fuel pump, and some water injection. That'd allow you to run a few extra pounds of boost on your stock system safely. If you have any money left over, buy DSMLink and some injectors, or a FMIC. 1G turbo DSM's are very easy to extract rediculous power from for very little money if you plan wisely. A bigger turbo should be one of the last mods on your list, as the 14b has lots of power left in it before you outgrow it.

Thanks for the reply. I was told that the turbo spools quickly...around 2500 RPM's. Also, I should forget about putting it on my 2g instead of the Super 16g? How much can I get for the T3/T4 Turbo? It is brand new still in the box.

A T3/T4 57 Trim is NOT going to spool at 2,500RPM on a 2.0 liter motor. 14B's don't reach full boost until 2,700RPM on our motors, and they are much smaller. The Hahn turbo kit you have on your 420A was designed specifically for that motor to provide quick spool up, and good response. Unless you have a fully built bottom end and a lot of fuel mods, I'd stick with what you got.

As far as how much for the T3/T4, check Ebay. You should at least get a few hundred for it.

I wasn't planning on putting it on my 1g until I had most of the stage 1 mods complete. Would it be a good turbo then or should I just go ahead and sell it and get a different turbo? What turbo do most of the 1g guys run? I basically got this turbo for free and would rather use it than sell it if its gonna help me in the end. I also have an extra Hahn Super 16g...would that be a good turbo for the 1g? I am going to definitely max out the 14b first before I ever upgrade turbos. Let me know what you think about it.
