Turbonetics 62-1 too big???

Hi,

I bought a 2g that have a Turbonetics 62-1. It's a t4 P-trim. I think the exhaust housing is to big for me. What should I do?? Change the exhaust housing for a t3 .63 or go with the .58 t4. The car is a daily driving car an I think this turbo is too laggy. I know a guy who is trading a .58 exhaust housing for one bigger(.63 or .69). Is this a good option? let me know...

see if you can get the t3 housing bc i dont see the smaller ar hotside making that big of a difference in spool....that turbo's naturally laggy...and if its a street car, i cant even imagine it in ptrim form LOL....is it bb or non? I bet your off boost in between shifts SUUUUUCK
 
My god. If you're not running 35psi+ on that thing you're wasting your time.

I'd say the .63 T3 housing would be a much better choice. I think the P-Trim turbine isn't the best choice, but it's better matched to that compressor than the V-trim compressor that Bullseye pairs it with. :confused:
 
What is the a/r on the turbine housing you have? Honestly you can tune the microtech and work out lag issues alot, especially if theres a crappy tune it in. Also did you check for boost leaks. When do you hit lets say 20psi by? From a 3rd gear roll, planting the gas pedal to the floor at around 3000 rpms?
 
I'm planning to to tune the car after I receive the cams, The car right now is set for 17psi but I'll set the boost for 25psi when I put the cams and take it for a tune... right now it makes 17psi around 4700 or 5000rpm. I have to check the A/R of it. How do I know it's a ballbearing or not??

Yeah I think right know there's a crappy tune because the cam angle sensor is all way back and at idle the WB is reading 10.9-11.2 and cruising 11.5-12.0. I've check for boost leaks but there's not.
 
Turblownetics is the worst turbo ever and you car is not ready a 62-1 anyways. You need to go smaller like a 16g or 57 trim and a .55 a/r stock bolt housing unless your want to start upgrades internals first. Just don't think you can slap on a big turbo for more power there's a lot more to that.

He bought the car with the setup, and those internals will be just fine with that turbo. If it was ball bearing most of the time they have oil and water going to the turbo, so in the center section were the oil it there will be 4 outlets on it. Definatly sounds like a real shitty tune there. Cars is getting too much fuel. It would be nice to know what injectors are in it also.

Cams and a intake manifold will give you a broader power range. Then get it tuned, and make sure theres NO boost leaks before you or someone tunes it so its right. Im sure you will notice a difference.

sounds like u need a good tune! i would definitely recommend getting those cams installed and a intake manifold. u will probably need at least 25psi to get that turbo in it efficiency range. itll definitely not spool like a 16g though! Should be good though with a nice 6k stutterbox launch and maybe antilag, but will definitely be laggy if u racing from a roll. should have some killer topend though with a good tune and supporting mods. Is it a t3 or t4 turbine?
 
It's a t4 turbine housing. I'll take it to tune a soon as I receive the cams, new timing belt, and a tubular manifold. The injectors are 750cc MSD. Thanks for the help.

The stock internal can do 400hp without a problem, BUT over that the stocks rods and piston are VERY liable and running a 62-1 capable capable of 600hp are high rpm he'll have problems with his valves and valve springs too.

As a said before, a smaller turbo will work better like a 16g, 57 trim, BW S256, HX35, etc... is more efficient spool wise and they'll give 400-500hp. Running a large turbo on low boost is not the way to go.
 
Its definitely not the turbo i would choose for the job, but it came with the car and i guess has all the piping set up for the t4. it would probably cost a good amount to go to t3. he will need to upgrade valvetrain above 7500rpm which he will probably need to run this turbo past 8k to be efficient and a shitload of boost. maybe go with a smaller A/r turbine housing but it would be cheaper to stick with t4 style if you already have it. I would think it should be pretty comparable to a gt35r t4 style. a good tune will help your spool and you should make good power.

Ran 24ish psi for about a year and a half on that turbo.
Running 4088 NOW STILL with the stock 7 with an 8500 rpm revlimit, damn near perfect compression, no sign of CW at all.
 
yeah i would stick with the t4 if you already have it, maybe the .58a/r as you said. i know someone who runs 10.0 in a grand national with this turbo and is also capable of daily driving. as was posted abouve those are great numbers on a stock 7bolt with a similar turbo.

Rizzoti just trapped 138 this fall on a stock bottom end that might be older than some of the members on this board. That would put him over 575whp. We made 603whp on a stock 6 bolt 2 years ago in a buddy's 2g. The car now runs an 850r on 30psi and its still going. I've yet to see the limit of a stock 6 bolt bottom end, but we'll know soon.

Well, your buddy is lucky that the stock rods and pistons won't give in, but he would do much better he went forged internals running a higher compression.
 
Im telling you stick with the turbo you have, you will most likely need bigger injectors, as i was hitting 105% duty cycle on 880s@ 26psi with a 60-1 p trim, and the fuel pressure at 50. Cams, and a tune will make the car change its pace big time. Work with what you have and you will be pretty impressed.

I agree that a 62-1 is too big but your turbo suggestions seem very vauge and all over the place. a 16g and s256 should not even be talked about in the same sentence. one is a500whp turbo at MOST proven by SBr and the other is a mutant 50 trim that could make 600whp with teh right setup. A hx35 and s256 are similar but then again you say 57 trim which is very vauge because trim does not designate size of a turbo.

I say get something smaller still though like he said around a s256 or hx35/40 size because one you don't have enough fuel to max out your turbo and your engine which I think will take 500whp safely max before you start getting to close to breaking point is a limiting factor as well. Knowing you can really only make that much whp safely why have a huge 650whp turbo with extra lag, Not to mention yoru talking about throwing cams in it too which will make it spool even slower.

A bigger compressor wheel than a turbo that is already too slow of a spooling turbo with even worse turbo tech def equals to big in my book. I put 62-1 in like a t66 category with spool and power .

But have you acually ever ran/tuned a car with a 62-1? I know two friends of mine with hondas 4 years ago that ran that turbo on a built b16 9:0.1 with .81 t4 housings. They would get 27psi by 5500.

Man it comes down to tuning/boost leaks/exhaust leaks. If you have any of them or all of them its going to be slower. And everyone always talks about old technoligy. The fpred (60-1) seems to have a huge market in the evo world, old technoligy that has been in the 9s before 35rs and extended tips billet hta stuff became the band wagon way.
 
If you put a smaller turbo on, you'll eventually get a thirst for more power! i say build the car around this turbo and if you want more power you can just bolt on any of the other t4 turbos with more hp capability. It will take you awhile to outgrow this 62-1! With a good tune you can get some good spoolup. I had a 60-1 and thought it was very streetable but maybe that my opinion.
