I have a TD05 16g and im just wondering if a turbo timer is required for a 4g63, Do I really need one? Meanwhile i usually park the car and wait 30 seconds and turn it off but i get iffy when my dad drives my car and he turns it on really quick and turns it off

It's not necessary unless he is ragging the shit out of it. Being that your turbo is also water cooled helps it cool down even more. Regular driving and turning it off won't hurt anything. I have one and it is mostly for the cool hey your car is still running. Is nice after I run it real hard though.

No, a turbo timer is next to useless on a coolant-cooled turbo. Just another wiring pain under the dashboard likely to fail.

I'm not sure what you mean by slumping. The turbo is oil and water cooled. Think about it. If your turbo seals were gonna go out from regular driving and turning it off then there would of been a turbo timer from the factory.

The oil is contained to the center cartridge. It's primary purpose is to create a "surface" for the turbine shaft to ride on in the two journal bearings as well as the thrust bearing assembly. While the oil does provide some cooling, there is an outer water jacket in the center cartridge completely separate from the inner oiled chamber. It's purpose is to cool the center cartridge preventing the oil from coking up even after shutting down the car.

I'm sure if I'm incorrect in any way I've explained something, Justin along with any of the mods or Wisemen will be right along to correct it. The general consensus is for sure that turbo timers are unnecessary on any car running a coolant based turbo (ie. Almost all mhi )

first of all let your dad know to wait the minimum 30 seconds before engine is shut of. If you dont have a turbo timer just yet, your gonna act like the turbo timer, well at least try. If you boost the shit out of the turbo and come to a stop where you would need to turn off your engine, my bet is to wait at least one minute and a half to 2 minutes before turning it off.

Yeah its because i have a cousin who has a gt30r on his Sti and he'd wait 30secs before turning it off but now he just got a turbo timer. What i meant by slumping is having oil still left inside and not all being flushed away when the engine is off.

Interesting thanks for the info!

So you do recommend having to wait to turn it off correct? I should always do this

If you beat on the car prior to coming to a stop, you've already created a crap ton more heat that the car will need to overcome. If you're honestly worried about coking up an mhi, go easy on the car for that last mile or so home. Idling the car is going to do very little in regards to cooling compared to a nice easy off throttle cruise.

I really wouldnt worry so much about this. You have a coolant based turbo. The most important thing to worry about is feeding it a GOOD clean oil. Apart from that, they are very durable.

This. water cooled no. Oil only maybe. I'd just idle my car for a minute or drive like a normal human being for a minute after beating on the car.

I have a turbo timer for my holset (oil cooled) and run for 30 seconds on the street and 1 min 30 seconds at the track. I'm switching to a BB water cooled FP turbo... And I'll still ise my turbo timer because it's there:) even if it's not totally necessary.

Also there is on the 1g visor it tells you to wait 30 seconds before shutting down. BAM!

Which still doesn't mean it's necessary. Could you imagine mass producing a car and having to explain how a turbo works and why and when to let it cool off to every buyer and seller? A lot easier to just print that. Still if it was a big enough issue they would dummy proof it and put a turbo timer in.
I didn't know that though urbansmoker1. I've only owned a 2g. Would be a cool accessory to have though. I'm guessing the visors are not interchangeable between 1 & 2gs?

Another thing. Op if you want one I would recommend the greddy. I bought mine years ago with a plug n play adapter. No cutting or splicing wires. Mine is set for 10 seconds but the more I drive it ( not sure if its time or how hard I drive it) the timer goes up on its own. Pretty cool

Who makes money when new cars break because someone didn't follow the instructions sold with the car?

The dealer ;).

Nobody makes cars that won't earn them money in maintenance costs, it's the name of the game.

Honestly though, a few quick shutdowns every now and then are not the end of the world, I wouldn't worry about it. Especially if a bit of slow driving is done before being parked, like cruising down the street to your house.

Theres a thread on this site about someone asking same thing as op and someone took a pic of the visor.

Personally use the apexi pen style turbo timer (auto timer) and the hks plug and play harness also no splicing or cutting.
