I have a quick couple questions about the HKS and Greddy Turbo TImers. I was looking at getting one for future mods and maybe to help prolong the life of my current T-25, (would it help? or does it only help actual, better turbos?). Also, i have heard that you must do quite a bit of extra wiring in order for it to work properly with the stock alarm system, and have also heard that while the engine is running it will not arm the alarm, but it will arm automatically when the engine finally shuts off. Is this true?

it will prolong the life of any turbo because after you take the key out of the ignition there is still oil and in the t-25 case coolant running through it. i have the newest hks turbo timer and there is no wireing for the alarm atleast i dont remember wiring it in. just rpms, mph, and a quarter mile thing

Just take the time to leave the car on for a minute before you get out. No wiring, and it's free :)

Not worth getting a turbo timer. Knew a couple people who ran DSM's untuned extremely hard then would just shut them down how and walk away - no problems. I wouldn't advise that, but would advise just sitting in the car an extra minute or 2 and letting it cool down just a little before leaving. Leave the house a couple minutes earlier than normal to get where you're going earlier and have time to let it sit - that's what I do.

Turbo timers are intended for use on turbos that are not water cooled which are used on daily-driven cars. This includes most Garrett T3's, most Holsets, and some larger MHI turbos.

It's not going to help a factory, water-cooled turbo unless you're doing a wide-open pull on a freeway then immediately turn into your driveway and shut the car off.

About 95% of the time you must cruise through a residential neighborhood or even city streets to reach your ultimate parking destination, and along the way the turbo will have more than enough time to cool efficiently.

If you do decide to get one, the wiring is not difficult. There is a harness you can buy for it. My HKS turbo times took about 10 minutes to install. More than anything, I used it to look cool and walk away from my car while it was still running. People would look confused. Before I had a turbo timer, i would just wait a minute like everybody else said, no big deal.

Turbo timers have been an issue of debate for a long time. There is no question that you need to let the turbo cool off after the car has been driven, even if the driving as not been wot. If you have an aftermarket turbo and you want to get some life out of it, they are essential. Basically they do work if you are lazy like me and don't want to sit in the car bored for a minute when you stop somewhere and let it cool off. They really are not expensive and are easy to install. As far as water cooled turbos not needing to be timed I would disgree. When I bought my FP red, Robert asked me personally over the phone if I had a turbo timer and said that he recommends the use of them always--I think I trust Roberts opinion over most peoples. If that's not convincing enough, Lucas English told me also when he tuned my car that turbo timers are really good and to use mine always. I could go into much more detail but the take home message is get a turbo timer and it'll make you turbo last longer and you'll never be sorry.

One more opinion
I have one on my car but I use it more for a/f guage than any thing else
They give you no HP gain but they can help prolong your turbo
It all comes down to personal choice

Don't waste your money on a turbo timer, I am sure by time you get to your destionation it will be cooled down.Unless you plan on beating the crap out of it everyday and usally the last 5 mins of driving to your destination it will be cool enough it really is a waste of money imo.

Obviously there's a lot of different opinions on this. I have one, use it for 60 secs after i shut my car off, if i feel i have hardly driven it, then i just push the power button on it and shut if off immediatly, the way i see it is turbo's are expensive enough, 100$ or less to prolong the turbo even if for just a few 4-5-6 thousand extra miles, is worth the hundred bucks...plus they read other things too, i like to use mine to read my volts. Which ever you feel you want to do, do it...chances are if you own a DSM your ''pockets aint empty ###''..LOL..2F2F haha

I'll agree to that as well. Even though they are meant for the turbo, they do other things which are nice such as voltage and on some models (like mine) they attach to the parking brake a feature that notifies the driver with a "beep" if the key is removed without the parking brake engaged. Additionally it has a feature that will shut the engine off if the vehicle starts to move during "turbo-timing. Besides, I love gadgets :p

Do you have the Greddy timer? I looked on the website and that thing does a lot of things, i have the link bookmarked on my iphone so i can reference it anytime i need it :). I also agree, gadgets are cool, and its fun to explain to oblivious people y your car is running without the keys, or shuts off on its own.

I see them like this-are they pointless...ehh, maybe. Do they hurt more then they help? No. Are they hard to put in? With the correct harness, it takes 10 min.

So the final tought on them-Go for it. You can have piece of mind and something that helps more than it hurts for around $50. I got my setup for about $10 shipped.

And way to bring back a 3 yr old thread. LOL
