I have kind of a specific question in regards to turbo selection.

Its with BB turbo's VS Non BB (Journal Bearing).

What is everyone seeing in differences in spool time of BB vs Non BB? When comparing similar turbo's making similar power? Would it be safe to say that a BB turbo will spool 3-500rpm sooner then a Non BB turbo on these engines (stock 4G63).

Reason im asking is because im used to T3/T04e 57trim .63 that i ran on my honda at 7psi, but it seems this turbo is 'too big' for my dsm, so i sold it. Now im looking to upgrade the turbo on my DSM, the manifold/wastegate etc i can figure out on my own, but turbo selection for these cars seems to be fairly different.

I was considering a GT28R or a GT30R, but the only downfall with BB turbo's seems to be that they cant be rebuilt, well.. they can be but its very expensive in comparison to Non BB turbo's, and i want to know if its really worth it?

The goals for the car is 400 awhp on 93 octane with water/alcohol injection, (on a stock 1G JDM 4G63 6bolt) and im having trouble deciding on which turbo to use, everything else is similar to my old car (except these things use MAF's instead of MAP/IAT). E85 isnt out of the question, but its not widely available here yet.

Im considering possibly a Straight T3 50trim Garrett Unit, or i may look into a BW unit, Id like to say away from the BB units unless the pro's outweigh the con's by a considerable amount, but im unsure if a 50trim will beable to support 400whp, thats why i was leaning towards the gt28r or even the gt30r (room to grow right?)

Boost will be controlled VIA AVC-R, or possibly the NLS AMS-500, or i may use AEM EMS and use their boost by gear setup if i dont decide to go with DSMlink.

Thanks everyone!

What is the longest you have owned a single turbo? Most people dont own ball bearing turbos long enough for them to go bad. Your talking 20,000+miles usually depending on how you treat it, usually they last a lot longer than that too. I would say go ball bearing, you will definately want the 500-800 quicker rpm spool up if you decide to go as big as a gt30r. But your goal is reachable with a good 50trim. if you have any more questions feel free to pm me, Ive ran a lot of different setups.

There are many 50 trim turbos that can put you above the 400hp mark, especially with water injection. Try talking to some of the vendors that we have here on tuners, then will give you all the information that you want.

A 20g can give you those numbers as well. It's journal bearing, and will still spool great for the street. Plus, if you buy a genuine MHI 20g you have a factory part that is tough and will last forever. Transient boost response is great, boost between shifts will be good as well. For only 400whp, I'd say go 20g. Also, having a turbo that will bolt right up is nice too.
