I'm building a turbocharged snowmobile, and I have a question for you turbo guru's out there. For my application, it would be great if I could have the turbo standing up vertically, instead of the standard horizontal position. My question is if the the oil will properly lubricate the bearings and drain correctly in the vertical position?

Here's a super crappy illustration of the two positions im talking about. The blue is compressor side, red is turbine. I would like to mount it the way the vertical pic shows.

People mount their turbos all funky ways.....the point is there is 60+ psi in that system....you should be fine. No need to remind me that at idle presure drops to 20ish...maybe even 15 or goes to 80+ while cruising...the point is its pressureized and you should be cool.

I'll only be running about 30psi oil pressure, except at idle, drops a lil. I thought I read somewhere that if the center section fills with oil and can't drain properly, the seals fail. I was also wondering if I need to have a restrictor on the feed line to the turbo? This is not being installed on a car, its a custom oiling system just for the turbo only.

What turbo would you be using?

Is it so much trouble to flip the turbo? I have never heard of that bearing failure because of draining....but im not dissmissing it. I say play it safe and read up...maybe call FP or TC.com. Some one will know.

Garrett T3/T4

Its not a really big deal if I have to have the turbo sitting horizontally, but if I can mount it vertically without any problems it will be alot better. That way I can use a straight pipe right to the turbo intake, and the exhaust routing will be much cleaner.

Here's a pic showing the way I want the turbo to be mounted. Incase your wondering, the turbo pictured is an aerocharger 5300, it is a self oiling VATN turbo. Pretty high tech, but too small for the hp I want to make, and they are $2000 new.
