I am new to the DSM community and I was hoping someone could help me out! If I am wrong about anything correct me because I want to learn. A week or so ago I picked up a 1995 eclipse g-st. anyways, I replaced the CAS, one ignition coil, water pump, timing belt, changed oil and oil filter. the guy before me replaced the head gasket and clutch too. My car has an injen intake pipe and filter, and EVO III td05 turbo, aftermarket recirculated BOV(I'm not even sure what brand it is!),hard intercooler piping, boost gauge and narrowband gauge. now, here is my first question. does anyone know what that little metal tube coming off the BOV is? (look in pics) then my second question is really important. I have only drove it once so far and when I drove it, It was peaking at like 19-20psi when I hit around 6000-6200 rpm. I'm thinking that is way too high too boost without the right parts to back my motor up. So I'm wondering, what do you guys think my boost should be at that would be considered safe? my motor has 180k on it and I don't wanna start breaking stuff. another problem I am having is I am running lean and sometimes I would hit around 4k in second or third gear and the motor would act like it lost spark for a second. noticed my lights were dimming and by the time I got back to my house my car was practically dead. looked at the alternator fuse and it was blown. remembered I accidentally hit the alternator while doing the water pump job and arced it which is I'm sure why it blew. does the loss of power sound like an alternator problem? I thought that's maybe why It seemed like I was losing spark for a second? Also, any thoughts on why I am running lean? unfortunately, I had to leave back to school four hours away so I couldn't even replace the fuse to see how it runs! I know this is a lot to answer and I thought about making two threads but I thought it would help for you too know all my symptoms. thank you!

It is indeed. But I also know that it will be getting painted again sometime in the near future.

As far as that bov goes....if its functioning properly, I'd say leave it for now and worry about the bigger issues at hand.

Mhi housing numbers # Small 16G= 49178-01520 Big 16G=49178-01420 Evo III 16G=49178-01470

Hey thanks! so I have good news and bad news. I actually took one picture of the turbo but I didn't think I was going to post it so I didn't put it up at first. Bad news is, I am in Fargo and four hours away and I am not sure of the serial or part number on it. All that information is on the other side of the turbo, and that inter cooler piping covers some of the turbo up too so that sucks. I had to leave back to school at NDSU so I am four hours away and I wont be home for two weeks! hopefully my brother will do me a favor and go out and read the number on it for me. Thanks for all the help though! I will need to get a boost controller to turn the boost down. Any ideas on what brand will work?

tell me if I am wrong here but isn't it possible that my car may be running lean because of my alternator fuse being blown? My thinking is maybe the fuel pumps are running slower so in turn there is not enough fuel causing it to run lean? I wish I could be home to switch out the fuse!!

No unfortunately I don't have it here. Me and my fiance drive her car back and forth and with my car being the way it is now I didn't really want to drive it four hours. Also with school being done in 3 weeks I wont have it up here. Next year I will though! Thanks for the offer though! I wish I did that would be awesome.

Well the alternator does supply power while the car is running. But if the battery still has enough voltage it should be fine. This is why I have extra fuses for everything.

I wish I had extra of everything:(

And it's fuel pump, Noo way you need 2 pumps on a 16g.;)

right, fuel PUMP. I hope the "running lean" situation is because of the fuse because my car was piratically dead when I was driving it, but it's never that easy is it haha. Well.... does anything else come to mind when you hear a "running lean" problem?

I'm going with Justin and the rest of the guys and say that's a knock off turbo unless the wastegate was swapped. IIRC the mhi stock wastegates didn't have adjusting actuators.

Ya I'm not sure! I guess I'll find out when I look at the numbers! If it is a knock off hopefully it holds up though. regardless I am going to turn down the boost. I am looking at boost controllers on this website in the upgrade path part and there are controllers for like 20 bucks and also like 150 bucks? does anyone know what I should buy?

Damn you guys are helpful.

OP turn down the boost level before any real damage is done. The arcing during the water pump replacement likely killed the alternator. If it was running off just the battery it will play games with the other electrical items in the car. Charge the battery, replace the alternator, the fuse, turn down the boost and happy motoring.

I hope I didn't mess the alternator up but we will see maybe I did. I will replace the fuse, turn the boost down and go from there. I still don't really understand why I am running lean but hopefully it stops when I replace the fuse or alternator. probably won't work out like that though ha

So I looked at the differences between real versions and knock offs of the evo III and I definitely have the knock off!

Just don't get an ebay one.How about that.

I have an apexi mbc.I'm sure glad I didn't pay for it.LOL

Hey so it turns out my turbo is a knock-off. I ordered a manual boost controller and so now I am wondering if I need to buy a different turbo, are the knock off turbos bad? could it be making me run lean?. I would probably just go with the stock turbo if I get one because I don't have a lot of money.

With some more research, I am pretty sure my whole problem is the wastegate flap is stuck shut because I am hitting 20 psi. there is no boost controller on the car. I have heard one big problem with the ebay evo 3 turbo is the wastegate flapper gets stuck shut, which I am pretty sure that's my problem. which would definitely give me that fuel cut I was experiencing. I am hoping there is just some rust on the wastegate arm and I can just clean it up. But whatever it is I just want to fix it. Can't wait to get home. when its fixed I am going to hook up the boost controller and for now probably leave it all the way open and run wastegate pressure.

bov could be a knock or it could be a real greddy that top part of the bov comes of from time to time but who knows the 16g need a serial number

You can tell its a knock off cause it should say TDO5H and not be blank. The guy who owned it before you prob went on a ebay shopping spree. I would redo most of what was done. Start with different bov, wires, plugs, keep the turbo until it goes.

ya for sure the turbo is a knock off. I don't think that BOV is a problem though. also I could hear it do its job recirculating the air in between shifts. Only when I let off the gas( so I know it isn't surge.) I did buy new plugs and I took the ones out that he had in there and they were really nice looking. Fancy plugs. definitely better than the ones I got. so I just left them in. I am not too concerned about that stuff right now I just want to focus on the big problem. If I do have a spark problem Ill swap them out for sure though. I am kind of worried about the plug wires being thrown into the cams haha.

Well i cant tell from the picture but does your wastegate evem have a vacummline ran off the nipple to a boost source or is there nothing on the nipple on the wastegate.that would cause you to run the much boost.take the actuator arm off the flap and see if it moves freely.i would say you probably dont have it hooked up to a pressure source so its not open where it should be.or there is a hole in the line running from the wastegate to the place your tapped into like the turbo or pipe after the turbo

Ya I know I was thinking that same thing about the vacuum line. I am at school right now, four hours away so I cant look at it personally. I had my brother check one day and he said there is no vacuum line hooked up to the waste gate. I sent him pictures of the wastegate and made sure he was checking the right thing too. (He doesn't really know much about cars) But then a couple days later my dad looked and said he did feel a line on the wastegate so I don't know haha. My dad knows a lot about cars but he has never worked with a turbo charged car so I don't know who is right. I just told them not to worry about it Ill just look when I get home. So yes it could definitely be that I don't have a vacuum line hooked up.
Ill find out this weekend finally! thanks for the comment

SO...... I fixed the boost problem. The guy before me had the waste gate line hooked up to my injen intake. So I fixed that. Tapped the ic pipe for my boost source and hooked it up. I'm running wastegate pressure now and the boost is under control. Although not everything is working so well. My BOV is broke. the diaphragm in it is shot for sure because I can hook a line up to that bottom nipple( which is suppose to help push the diaphragm) and if I blow through it the air blows out the top nipple with ease. Also I have a super loud ticking sound that I will be posting in another thread.
