I tune the a 91 DSM? I can't use DSM link so how would I go about tuning? Air/Fuel, Timing Curves, etc.

thanks, erik

i don't mean to sound like an @$$ or anything... but why do you need to worry about tuning (more specific?) a 1g when you drive a 96 cavalier?

not offended, although you could have saved your fingers on the posting. the cavalier was given to me as a gift, it will be my daily driver till it dies. i put money into it to keep it running where it should be, nothing more nothing less.

i want to get a 1st gen dsm, i use to own a 97 tsi and knew i could get many things to tune that car. even a stand alone fuel management system given the money.

i am trying to get an automatic 1st gen awd. i want to add like a gm 3.5 MAF ( still trying to figure out if thats the stock LS1 MAF, or where it comes from ) and other ad ons. Like a SVT 70MM throttle body. It all would need to be tuned out as far as air fuel goes.

The whole point is I want to work on this car by only me, aside from the tire shop putting tires on it. I just don't want to take it to AMS or Hahn to get it tuned, it wouldn't be worth it to me. I want to make a bad a$$ car that is light in weight and hooks up from off the line on down. Pure and Simple.

Erik

If you're looking for a drag car, I would not pick a DSM with an automatic transmission.

MHO.

ok, i see where you're coming from. but... if you don't want anyone else touching the car (aside from the tires), you'd better know a lot about transmissions, because your tranny is going to need A LOT of work if you want an a/t, bad-a$$ drag car. this of course assuming that your definition of bad-a$$ is faster than a m/t dsm with a boost controller and i/e. good luck.

to the best of my knowledge, all of the fastest drag cars in the world are variations of an a/t

hmm fastest drag cars like full out drag being something like the rwd eclipse or like john sheppard hes drag but far from the rwd car. i think a majority of the quickest drag cars are actually manual. with the exception of rwd conversions, top fuelers and shit like that.

Show me a large-scale, production passenger car, sold in the US in the last 20 years, that has run a sub-10-second timeslip on any factory automatic transmission. You are right, they are variations of such, but not much of the internal parts of those transmissions are stock.

The fastest drag cars are autos, yes, but they are old muscle cars or custom-fabbed jobs that can use rediculously beefed-up transmissions like C4's and TH400's.

Not many people are too interested in beefing up the auto AWD transmissions, mostly because it's too costly to do and requires many custom pieces.

So let me get this straight. You are going to make your first mods a MAFT and a TB and then you want to tune it for those. Huh. Well I think that you should follow the mod list that is proven to be the best way to mod your car. I would also not get an auto because it wont get out of the hole as well as a manual. I had exhaust and a MBC on my FWD car and that was it and it went 14.2 at 100. No tunning, no TB no any of that other wanna be cool shit. Just parts that work for the level I was on. Sorry if it sounds like I am being an ass but most people think that every little thing they do to there car "messed up there tune". Switching to a 2G MAF, yes. Bigger turbo, yes. Puttin gon a TB that you dont need in the first place, NO.

I would just have to say dont get a dsm if you are going to get an auto. If you never want to go fast and follow any of the advice of the people who post here, then get the auto. You will never stand a chance against a real dsm though.

A good friend of mine with a auto DSM ran a 10.6 @ 132 at the 1/4 mile track this weekend. Don't under estimate an auto tranny.
