Polishing a 1st Gen BOV

I've heard of people polishing the army helmut green 1st Gen BOV. Can this be done easily? Is the cap of the BOV made out of alloy or some type of metal that won't rust or corrode after the finish is removed? A step by step how-to would be appreciated.

Get some mother's mag polish and a towel and go to town. Did it on mine. Looks good.

The lid is press-formed steel, the body is die-cast aluminum alloy. They'll both polish up real pretty, the steel will need either clearcoat or repeated wax and polish, or a similar atmospheric barrier.

I just used flat black.

Sometimes you can find the factory plastic cover, but it's uglier than the greenish coating.
