Did tons of searching and reading before I decided to post. Just looking for some advice since this is my 1st dsm ive messed with. (not new to wrenching on cars. I have a 383 sbc with a 78mm turbo also)
Little background.Car has 171k on it.
Car starting smoking a little on take offs , stop lights , etc... few weeks ago.
A lot under boost getting on the highways. ( typical 3rd gear /4 th gear pull to merge into 75 mph traffic ) Once out of boost it would stop smoking and be fine for the 25 mile trip home from work.
I figure valve seals or turbo oil seals. Well last week total james bond smoke show out the exhaust. I get it to my shop and at a idle you can see smoke just pouring out the center section of the turbo.
Trailered it home tonight. Pulled off the trailer into garage. Pulled plugs out #2 smoked out the hole a little. I did a compression test. (cold results for now) Will let it warm up tomorrow when I get home and retest again)
Comp. results are with-in specs but seem on the low side.
DRY TEST:
145 145 140 145
WET TEST:
160 160 150 160
I know a wet test will deff. bump the results. and I should do it at Operating temp. (again will do that tomorrow )
I guess my main question is this..
From the description I would guess this turbo let go and the seals are shot.
The comp. test would lead me to think the rings are ok and I should be fine with pulling the head. doing a valve job / timing belt / wp /etc.. and putting a evo 3 16g turbo on.
Opinions , thoughts , suggestions all welcome good or bad...

Yeah I think you need a new turbo.
