Did tons of searching and reading before I decided to post. Just looking for some advice since this is my 1st dsm ive messed with. (not new to wrenching on cars. I have a 383 sbc with a 78mm turbo also)

Little background.Car has 171k on it.
Car starting smoking a little on take offs , stop lights , etc... few weeks ago.
A lot under boost getting on the highways. ( typical 3rd gear /4 th gear pull to merge into 75 mph traffic ) Once out of boost it would stop smoking and be fine for the 25 mile trip home from work.

I figure valve seals or turbo oil seals. Well last week total james bond smoke show out the exhaust. I get it to my shop and at a idle you can see smoke just pouring out the center section of the turbo.

Trailered it home tonight. Pulled off the trailer into garage. Pulled plugs out #2 smoked out the hole a little. I did a compression test. (cold results for now) Will let it warm up tomorrow when I get home and retest again)

Comp. results are with-in specs but seem on the low side.
DRY TEST:
145 145 140 145
WET TEST:
160 160 150 160

I know a wet test will deff. bump the results. and I should do it at Operating temp. (again will do that tomorrow )

I guess my main question is this..
From the description I would guess this turbo let go and the seals are shot.
The comp. test would lead me to think the rings are ok and I should be fine with pulling the head. doing a valve job / timing belt / wp /etc.. and putting a evo 3 16g turbo on.

Opinions , thoughts , suggestions all welcome good or bad...

In my personal opinion I would run it till it dies and in the mean time build a new engine with the port/polish and all the goodies.

The service limit on a 1g 4g63t is 121psi...

And if you see smoke boostin down the on ramp to the highway and its black smoke it is just unburnt fuel, the stock tune dumps fuel when it sees full boost, a 10:1 air/fuel mix.

You asked and thats my .02. But it's eventually up to you, to each their own.

sorry I should have clarified. Its always been blueish oil smoke.
Non drivable as is its smoking so bad. Im 99% sure its turbo.

PCV is free flowing and not clogged , etc..

Just looking for 2nd opinions being this is my 1st dsm to toy with.

Well I said screw it. Pulled the exh. mani and turbo out. This is what I got. major oil leakage , some shaft play. Ive seen way worse shaft play on different turbos.

Exhaust port are dry. So valve seals are good. I have some seepage from the D/side corner of the head. So Im gonna pull it off anyways and do a head gasket / timing belt / cam seals , etc....

While its all apart since I do porting I'll port the head , thermal coat the valves , chambers , pistons , etc.. Will ceramic coat new turbo when it shows up also.

Going to search some stuff now. I have a HX40 on the shelf and have built my own turbo headers for v8 sbc 's before. So its an option. Or just get a evo 3 and call it a day. Since I don't plan to push this car anywhere near what a hx40 can do.

yes there looks to be some RTV on the gasket also. Last owner had the car for 15yrs been neglected.

I just picked it up 2yrs ago and redoing it little here and a little there.
Never smoked up till a month ago little worse week by week.
Then started to come and go. Then always at a take off, etc.. Then up and total smoke.

anyways its all getting redone.
I have ported manifold , 255 pump and regulator , complete fmic kit , gm maf and maft ,sitting on shelf. I guess a new turbo and injectors will be ordered and everything will all go on now.

edit: 6:25 pm 12/19/12
tore apart the turbo today. seals are shot.
mayor cracks by waste gate flapper

Previous owner much not have fun good oil or let run before shutting it down. TONS of carboned up choked oil on exh. impeller and under the heat shield when pulled off shaft also.

just an update. Not that ayone cares. cars been sititng tore apart. Been essing with my turbo camaro (383 w/ turbonetics tc78) and driving my truck.

put a turbonetic fmic kit on , ported 2g mani, waiting on a 16g to show up. Get the thing back to boosting.
Gonna toss in some 550 injectos and a maft / 3" gm maf I have on a shelf also. or sell those 2 pieces and do a 2g maf.

Thanks for your update.
Please keep us posted on the progress.
I am picking up a 90 Talon AWD this saturday with 156k on it.
Im sure Im going to need to do what your doing at some point and seeing as how yours seems to be close to what im getting it would be nice for me as guidance.

Mine has 171k on the clock. Was kinda neglected by previou owner. He owned it for 15+ years. Was his daughters car in HS.

Its a fun Daily driver. Im picking up an extra block and ported head to rebuild. Nothing Major. simple bolt ons .
