seeing that I have some 6 bolt rods in mint condition I wanted to ditch the low compression 1g pistons and use some forged pistons with 2g compression. however how would I get them to fit seeing that stock rods are not fully floating like the pistons are designed? could I press the stock pins on the forge pistons? I also hear that I could just get a bushing for the rods and make it a full floating setup but where do I get these bushings? I know I could use 2g pistons but its gonna be close to the cost of going with a forged setup. Thanks in advance.

Using 2G pistons is not near the cost of a forget setup, you can have a local machine shop bore out the connecting rod to allow the larger 2G wrist pin to fit for less than the cost of forged pistons alone, though I'd get ARP rod bolts to be on the safe side so you don't have to worry about stretching bolts.

If you're not doing a full balance build, you can at least match the rod/piston weights.
All you need is a decent scale & a 4" grinder. You remove unneeded weight from the
pistons in the middle of the arch skirts. With the rods you grind excess off the bottom
of the middle of the caps. After the pistons have been added, reweigh them & grind
the rod caps if needed. You'll be surprised how much they differ in weight stock.
Cheers !

I am not sure about the wrist pin dia, between the 1g pistons and the 2g pistons, but I do know there is a diffrence.

IMPO, if you are going to the expense of having to bush the wrist pin of a stock rod, and have it resized for ARP rod bolts, by the time you have that all done at a machine shop, parts and labor, will will not be far from the price of a set of aftermarket H-beam rods.

yes, and have the balance checked and matched on the rods and pistons at a min, or just have the whole rotating assembly balanced.

AWD Hybrid is spot on that point. the engine will run much more smoothly.

If 2G pistons will be enough for your power goals, go with them. They will be quite a bit cheaper than going forged. Forged are lik 450 at the lowest. 2G pistons can be had for 60. Machine work could be done for no more than 50. Rod bolts are $38. You will save quite a bit.

yeah you make the prices seem kinda of low. Around here in new york the cheapest option for machining my 6 bolt rods is dsm graveyard and thats like $140. Now I really want to get new pistons because used ones could have small cracks but if I come across a good deal then I will jump on it. Just to throw it out I am also researching on the benefit of going with evo 9 pistons.

you don't have to have a DSM specialist machine your rods, look up the diameters in the wrist pin for the 1g-2g rods and then tell the local machine shop how much you need the hole enlarged. That's where he is getting the $50 pricetag from.

Here are the specifications for putting 2g pistons on 1g rods:

I had my local machine shop quote me about $30 a rod. That makes it $120 total. You can get some new 2g pistons for around $100, at least that's what I paid and Ebay has them probably even cheaper. That brings the grand total to roughly $220 for internals that have been proven to handle at least 400awhp and in many cases a lot more. A set of forged pistons is gonna run you at least $400 plus you have to have them balanced. My machinist said if I got both forged pistons and rods it would be $300 just to balance the whole assembly. I don't know how much it is to balance just pistons though. I don't know what your power goals are but 2g pistons on 1g rods is a hell of a deal. Also evo 9 pistons are at least $300 for a set making them a lot more expensive than the 2g pistons which have handled some really big power. I bought evo 8 pistons and rods off of eBay for $200 bucks, but the pistons where junk and I was going to get some replacement evo pistons. After I found out they were $300 I thought that was pointless because for another hundred I could go forged. I ended up just going with the 2g pistons.

then add in the price of arp rod bolts, about $40 and then resizing the big ends, another $60
so add that up your at appox $150 on stock rods

pistons can be all over ths place as far as price goes, depending on brand and how they are made, and what they are made of

I just took a quick peek at ebay, and saw some H-beam rods for $229 +$15 shipping

Not eagle rods but still an 4340 H-beam, they look to be about the same I have used in some (hate to say it here) honda builds

well I have been doing some homework and also considering the 2g npr replacement pistons found on slowboy racing and ebay. They seem fine and a few other tuners had good luck so far. Does anybody know anything bad about these pistons that I may have overlooked?
