Trying to choose the right non-turbo exhaust.

I've been looking and searching forums for NT exhaust setups. Can't seem to find any videos of what they sound like. I know that pipes are pipes, and that sizing is the most important part.

I've also found from my searches that most people go with a 2.5 inch exhaust.

and the outlet is 4-inch. Seems kinda big (considering my Mazda I had was only a 3-inch outlet and had a turbo setup), and just didn't know if it would work out and sound good.

I just don't want to make the wrong purchase. I don't know for sure if my exhaust is stock or not (seller of the car never specified), but I don't think it originally was.. it sounded great up until the insulation started falling out from inside of the muffler.. now it sounds like a total fart can (it's almost unbearable to go past 4k rpm it's so damn loud).

Mainly I'm just making sure that before I go ahead and buy it that it's a good choice and won't sound like crap..
 
Why don't you just go have a new muffler welded on instead of buying a whole new exhaust.

I think the guy who originally owned it only had the muffler put in. But I haven't really looked at the exhaust to tell. Haven't owned the car for that long, and had a few issues to work out with it (just got the strut tower rust repaired, and the car inspected).

I do know the headers are stock, as well as the down pipe, but not sure on the rest of it.

I guess if it is an aftermarket cat-back he put on, what should I look for in terms of a good muffler?

edit: The only things I know for sure that were put on the car before I bought it was an eBay short shifter, eBay tail lights, and eBay power antennae. He had never mentioned any exhaust work to me, though it doesn't sound stock..

I have a 3 in. cat back on my 4G64 from SR-S. Only thing I don't like about it is the resonator on it is huge. I've bottom out on it, and scraped it (stock supsension). It's loud too. I can hear it in my bathroom in my apartment when I'm letting it warm up. But everyone approves of it. :D
 
After trying numerous cat-back eBay junk setups only to have the core rust out inside the muffler after two years, I finally built my own axle-back system using a full-stainless Dynomax muffler. Been on the car over two years, still sounds great, and has 0 rust issues. :D

There's tons of youtube videos man with what other exhaust sound like. Not sure how you can't find any. Personally I bought an obx type r exhaust and love it on my car but I'm not stock either. Just look at the material the exhaust is made of and you will be good as far as rust. You could put the same exhaust on 5 different 420a's and they will all sound#different depending on engine set ups.
 
The thing is you non turbo motor needs the back pressure. I would think 3 inch would be overkill. Maybe a 2.5 inch cat back would be sufficient. Just my 2 cents.
 
I had the Greddy Evo II on my old N/T and it sounded awesome. Nobody had a bad thing to say about it, and the cops never harassed me for loudness.
