Got codes 1400 and 443 on our 97 gst. Code reader said 1400 is a mfg specific code. 443 is evap, would that probably be a gas cap?

Start simple first..For the p0443 code that would be for Evap purge valve. Check the connector to the solenoid on the firewall and the check valve on the canister under the battery tray.
P1400 is related to your MDP sensor on top of your intake manifold, heck connector, wiring at first. Both of these are related to emissions.

Is this the mdp sensor? I was told it would be ok just left go as long as its plugged in

Yea looks like its connected but just hanging there. Since you have a 1g intake manifold, it does not have flange for it to read from manifold.
In this link below the MDP is Item #1 and the Evap solenoid is #27, lots of pics for identification. Helps a lot.

Make sure wiring is good, on 97 the evap canister might be in front by fog light, not too sure. There are solenoids hanging off the firewall as well if you want to check.
If this code bothers you, you can try to get a vacuum source hooked to the bottom of it and see if code goes away. It monitors EGR function. You could check if you egr is clogged with carbon, if its that bad as well. Try vacuum source first and keep it vertical like in the pic of link i referenced.
