Well, I have no clue how transmissions work or how bad this damage is (although it doesn't look that bad, but as I know that's not always the case.. looks are deceiving).

I think I found the culprit (picture 4), as it looks like the ravaged remains of what used to be a cog.

What's my next step? :hmm:

First you want to weld up the cover. Behind the drivers side tire there is a rubber plug in the wheel well, behind the plug is the crank pulley. You will need to put a breaker bar on that and point handle at the ground. That will stop your engine from rotating, while you apply 110 ftlb to the 36mm nut that is loose in the trans. When you done you'll want to take a big standard screw driver pound the nut into the slot in the shaft. Assemble with RTV.
Here's a link that might help you.

Don't lose the wave spring when you re-assemble, and be sure to give the RTV an opportunity to cure a bit before refilling the tranny.

the second pic is of the reverse spring. so tell me more about the piece of metal in the third pic. Is it aluminum. take a close side angle pic of the center shaft
Guess that's the wave spring.. and a picture of the center shaft.

About 1/16 of an inch, but it won't budge other than that.

Looked at stuff in the repair manual.. the fourth picture in my first post is either the fifth gear syncro assembly or something like that. It has grooves that looks like it would have fit into the fifth gear syncro (gold cog in second picture of first post). Am I right on any of this?

if the shaft move i can tell what has happened. see the flange in the bottom of this bearing journal? it has broke off in your trans. that piece of metal you found that is chewed up, is what is called the bearing shim. you will need a new intermediate shaft bearing, bearing plate, and you will have to crush solder to find out what size shim you will need for the bearing.

I was contemplating with a buddy of mine, and we put it into reverse because I was having a bit of a problem getting into that gear before this happened.

This is what we saw.. OMG

It looks to be that way.. I really don't want to take the transmission off. Is there any way to rebuild it through the rear cover?

ive got to get to the garage right now. got a clutch to put in one right now. so pm me tomr and i can start getting you part names and part numbers.

I dont post much in the forums, but i must say that you are very knowledgeable, when it comes to trannies. You should be a wiseman. Make sure you keep being around to help others. Thanks for your support in this community. Once again your knowledge is invaluable.

A clutch install is a far cry away from a trans rebuild FYI...

Just replacing the bearing retainer plate and tossing it back together is asking for trouble... there's a reason it broke. Considering you wore through the transmission case you've run it long enough to trash the bearings.

If I were you I'd start looking for a rebuilt trans...

Additional pictures from taking the tranny apart.

Please excuse my double post, but consider this a thread bump since I haven't done anything about this for about a month. :)

I was reading the manual and it looks like the "transaxle case adapter assembly (and the intermediate shaft roller bearing)" needs to be replaced as the piece holding the intermediate shaft roller bearing in place broke.. so that's why it's all chewed up to crap.

Where could I get both of these? Do I just call the people/person at Mitsubishi Graveyard or does anyone have a better store in mine where I could order these parts from?
