Does anybody have a number i can call to see if my cars had the recall done?thanks.

OK I have a 1998 GSX. The transfer case is leaking. I talked to the dealership around here and they looked my car up in the computer and found NO open recalls. I do not trust these shady crooks. How can I find out if my car is covered in the recall since from what I have read it covers until May of 1998. Will I have to call Mitsubishi to find out (and also yell about this dealership)? Any news would be helpful. Also the seal on my rear differential is leaking where the driveshaft attaches, which really is just annoying. Is this just a seal that I can easily replace? Any help would be much apppreicated.

You should call the number that is listed on the very first post of this thread. The first number is the one you call if you have a Mitsubishi, the second is the one you would call if you have a Talon or Laser. In your case, you call the first one. Have your VIN number in hand and they will tell you what you need to know.

Now in my case..... the part in question is the Tail Housing Extension, not the "Tail Spline." I finally got the correct name for it. The part # is MD 731331. If anyone can help me I would appreciate it. I think the only way that I can get this part replaced is if I can prove:
1. that this part is one of the parts under the recall
2. or that the recall (a leaky seal) damaged the Tail Housing Extension because of a
low fluid level.

It appears that I am the only one that has posted that has run into this situation.

Regards,

Tyler

here is the part in question. after looking at this diagram.... i dont think i can win now :(

Ok i think i found my way in. It is the 6th item in Section A. It says it clear as day. The part of my transfer case.... the tail housing extension is leaking. So it must be repaired.

Service Procedure:
A. Inspect Transfer Case:
1. Road test the vehicle to check for any abnormal noise or grinding sounds from the transfer case. If any abnormal noises or grinding sounds are heard, the transfer case must be replaced. (Ignore normal gear noise such as high pitch whine.)
2. Raise the vehicle on an appropriate hoist.
3. Remove the transfer case oil filler plug. Check the amount of oil in the transfer case by inserting the provided transfer case oil level gauge (PN MR470416) into the oil filler hole (figure 1)
-- If the transfer case oil level registers anywhere on the gauge, the oil level is sufficient, continue with step 5.
-- If the transfer case oil level does NOT register on the gauge, continue with step 4.
NOTE: If fill plug shows signs of leakage, replace the fill plug gasket.
4. For all vehicles with low oil levels: Remove the transfer case oil drain plug (Figure 2).
-- If oil runs out or drips continuosly, transfer case replacement is not required.
-- If NO OIL or only A FEW DROPS OF OIL come out, the transfer case must be replaced. Continue with Section B.
NOTE: If drain plug shows signs of leakage, replace the drain plug gasket.
5. Inspect the driveshaft yoke plug and front exhaust pipe (Figure 3) for signs of oil leakage. If signs of leakage from the yoke are evident, the driveshaft yoke must be replaced.
IMPORTANT: The driveshaft yoke MUST be replaced on ALL 1998 model year vehicles.
6. Inspect the transfer case for indications of any oil leakage. Any transfer case oil leak must be repaired.
7. -- If the driveshaft yoke, input and/or output shaft oil seal, and/or transfer case require replacement, continue with Section B.
-- If the transfer case oil leak is from a component that requires thansfer case disassembly (Case upper cover gasket, gear case O-ring, front case driveshaft cover O-ring or reseal case-to-extension housing), refer to the service manual for the repair procedure.
-- If the transfer case does NOT require replacement and there are no signs of oil leakage:
A. Reinstall the transfer case drain plug (if removed)
B. Fill the transfer case with hypoid gear oil (SAE 75W-85W GL-4 or higher) (Figure 2).
C. Install the transfer case oil filler plug.
D. Lower the vehicle and return it to the customer. No further action is required.

I thnkthy're blowing smoke to recoup their responsibility which is cheap. I would cover the vent on the top and blast the case clean at the car wash or even with a garden hose and some degreaser. Do what I did and get a new yoke and seal for around $80. and have it put on. Likely the tailshaft housing is not leaking at all. Mark

im not paying anything. if they say it is the tail housing then that is part of the xcase and they have to pay for it. so if they change their story i got them. i have them by the balls either way because they admitted that my transfer case is leaking. according to #6 if the transfer case is leaking, it must be repaired..... end of story.

all i haveta say is mother f*cker!!!!! Either this dealership is really good at this or im just really dense. no responses to that last sentence needed.

i went in and they said that the concern with the tail housing extension is that there is a brass ring inside that is not holding the input shaft still. so it is wobbling around and eventually wears out the seal that is under the recall. so they said that if i dont buy the tail housing extension everything will be fine, but i will experience a leak within a couple thousand miles because the input shaft will have worn that seal away. so i have nothin to say to that. they said that the tail housing extension is not servicable meaning that i cant buy that brass ring seperate. i have to pay $230 for the entire thing. o well :(

i even went to mitsubishi first and got their recall announcement before hand. i'm stumped.......

thanks for the space, i hope someone learned something from my detailed experience.

Guys i'm on my 2nd "recall" of this ####ing thing as well and my neighborhood satan is not letting me have this thing done free. This is bullsh*t.

Can anyone give me some advice that's had their seal replaced under the terms of the recall when they've gone back to satan for more than the 1st time?

Ok, well i'm having the district manager of Mitsu review my case. I'm sure gonna be pissed if they dont let me get this service free. I mean c'mon, how common sense is it that the first time my car was "recalled" no maintenance was performed, and now that it actually NEEDS work, mitsu is tucking tail.

So yea, my xfer case has started leaking. I took it into satan (McGinnis Mitsubishi) here in houston to have it recalled. The dealer refused the recall due to the recall being "previously performed" back in 2001 when i brought it in and it wasn't leaking. They just replaced the fluid in the case during that visit. THEY DIDN"T EVEN REPLACE THE DRIVESHAFT YOKE ON MY CAR LIKE IT SAYS TO DO ON ALL 98'S IN THE XFER CASE RECALL SERVICE PROCEDURE!

So i called mitsu headquarters. Fist thing out of their mouths was it wasn't their problem, it was up to the dealer, then after a couple back and forth phone calls, they said it was up to the regional manager. The regional made his decision and refused the recall as well due to it already being done, and my car being modified. So i called the NHTSA. They said they can't help me because they dont do civilian/business disputes. They gave me 2 companies to call. The center for auto safety, and of course, the BBB.

Filed a complaint on the BBB (gonna take 6 months), and the CfAS doesn't do single complaints due to their low funding.

EVERYONE IS GIVING ME THE RUNAROUND! I DONT WANT TO GO TO COURT TO RESOLVE THIS!

PLEASE HELP!! I'M DESPARATE! WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT TO MITSU TO WIN EVEN WHEN WE ALL KNOW THEY'RE WRONG???

Am i going about this the wrong way? I've done everything in my power to handle this peacefully and i'm still gettin spat on. Why?

Please respond asap, i'm really stuck here. I need some help.

This issue has been discussed over and over again in THE transfer case recall thread. The situation you face is no different than that of most other owners of Mitsu branded DSMs. There's really no more advice that anyone could give as to how to get help with the situation. Mitsu doesn't honor the recall for the life of the car regardless of repair history for the car. Chrysler dealership do honor it (I've yet to hear of one not so far) even if the recall has been done before. No one has an answer that you want to hear just the ones we've all given and already heard.
Doug

yea i figured that. Didn't know if there were any updates since THE recall thread. But anyways, i'm gonna post something up to have another recall be added to the NHTSA website for 5 spd's and maybe we can have the recall state lifetime for this one.

Anyways, i'm filing lawsuit against mitsubishi for this. So cheer me on.

For all the mitsu's that need to have this recall done for the 2nd time. EVERYONE PM ME! If we get a group together that's having trouble getting dealerships to recall their xfer cases and contact either the Center for Auto Safety, or the NHTSA, we might be able to get them to reform the xfercase recall into stating that it is for the lifetime of the vehicle.

I'm only 1 person though, i'm pretty sure if we flood the NHTSA's phone lines w/ complaints against mitsu dealers, they'd be forced to enforce it!

im on the 3rd t-case, all i did was call DSC and told them what i was told from the shop, 3rd time it was leaking, so i told them that, and told me to call a diffrent dealer then i took it to, and 1 week later, i have a new tcase.

I love their cars but hate the way they do business. The irony now is that they claim to have the best backed cars in the business by copying Hyundai's warranty and adding an additional year to road side assistance, then refuse to fix the cars is they see a sticker on it, or simply believe you race it. It's a bunch of bull and the Evo guys are really getting screwed right now. Good luck with your lawsuit.

My .02

I'd rather drive my car than deal with SATAN's BS or spend the time and money to fight a battle over something this small. Just buy the DS yoke rebuild kit ($35 from JNZ Tuning) and the rear xfer case seal and do the job yourself.

This is what I did after getting the runaround after mine started leaking again.

Diamond Star Chrysler, for the eagles any ways, I give them a call, and give the vin, tell them whats up, and then they tell me what to do.

GUYS I WON!!!

After calling them today w/ the written law in hand that states they can face up to a $15,000,000 fine for refusing the recall, and telling the service manager there that i was gonna sue him for negligance, they are gonna perform the recall!

I WIN MOTHER####ERS!!!

MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

Mitsubishi. This is why the 4G can't be pretty enough for some of us.

Not that they're that much better, but the service guy at the Chrysler dealer who did mine (Geweke, Lodi) made those calls for me.

Glad you prevailed. :thumb:

I have a 92 Plymouth Laser RS AWD. About 3 weeks ago I was headed out to visit my friend, and I was about to go onto the interstate.....I'm going down a side road and my car just stopped like I hit my brakes.....I thot maybe I was stuck since it was a rainy night and I was on a dirt road but I noticed my tires weren't moving so I called my friend kyle and he said its probly my t-case....and he was right LOL. Anyways I take my car to Chrysler and they said yes the t-case is locked up we will replace it and it should be down by last friday. So I call them on Friday ready to pick up my car and they say the transfer case is lost in the mail. So I had no problem because I'm being patient since its being replaced for free right? wrong. Now yesterday they call me and say that they aren't going to fix it....that the recall has been previously done on the vehicle and they put a redesigned transfer case in, but the transfercase only lasted 5,000 miles? obviously they did a bad job if it goes out after 5,000 miles.....so the District Manager says they won't fix it and I'm not really sure what to do....I've called the NHTSA and they said they will try to get it resolved....Anyone have any idea on what else I can do?

Thanks,

Dustin
