I guess what I'd really like to know is if the tech instructions for the recall say anything about test driving the car. If it doesn't I think I have a case.
Well I dont know how true My 2cents are, But I have NEVER had a clerk at the grocery store eat recalled Meat I had to take back. They know the part is faulty and dont need to "test" it to find out.

ROFL You're a funny guy.

So I just talked to a different dealership about what happened and they said dealership policies are to test drive EVERY vehicle that comes through the service department regardless of what the service is. It is part of the inspection that they do.

So I'm probably screwed. I guess I'll go buy a compression tester and double check.

At least I can put in a better head gasket and some ARP's while I'm in there though. Oh, and a timing belt and water pump and.... @#$%. So much for the Evo 3 mani and Eibachs I was going to buy.

I hear ya, I just did my first timing belt swap ever and to top it off, I installed the SBR balance shaft eliminator kit, new injectors, pump, fuel lines, radiator, intake, intercooler piping, oil lines, exhaust, etc., etc., etc., and I need a head gasket. I just wanna have some fun already. :D

So I talked to another dealership and they guessed which dealership I was referring to without me naming them. Makes me trust my dealership that much less. :notgood:

The other dealer I spoke to said that I should try and negotiate with 'em. I'm thinking it would be fair if I bought the parts and they installed them. We'll see how the negotiation goes. Wish me luck!

Another thing I just thought of; the tech specifically said that the recall papers told him to test drive it. He didn't say anything about it being part of the standard service. I'll see if I can work that angle too.

So I talked to the dealership and they told me to go screw myself.

I ran over to NAPA to go buy a compression tester and noticed I didn't see any white smoke.

So I came home and did a compression test which gave me some mixed news. The cylinders were dead even across the board at 115. So I probably don't have a blown head gasket and it might have just been frost or something in the exhaust. Down side is, I did a wet test and got 135-40 so I probably have fried rings. :| Sad thing is I just put this engine (JDM) in this summer because it was so much cheaper than a rebuild he said compression was at 170. Guess I should've checked that a lot sooner, eh? :p

Let me play the other side of the coin

I do this for a living and I test drive anything that I think requires driving before and after the repair. Other wise how am I going to know if I did the repair right? I usually take the customer with me on the before part to make sure their description fits my suspicions. When I have repaired, I take them again to verify repair. This makes the diagnosis easier, pinpoints the problem faster and helps you in repairing the right problem. Sometimes cars have a problem the customer wasn't aware of. He's thinking brakes when the problem is a wheel bearing or even a tire. A very important part of diagnostics is making sure you and the customer are on the same sheet of music.

If the customer complains of light cruise noise or driveability, then I try to reproduce his complaint. If it's at idle, then no problem. I just let it idle until it malfunctions. Sometimes it's going on the interstate and going up a long hill. Etc. If the customer said it won't smoke the tires and it's an Escort then I tell him, No problem. It just won't do it.

If it's a high performance problem, then I try to find what it is. Sometimes requiring me to duplicate what the customer was doing to get to the source of his complaint. I do this with the customer present in the vehicle. I do not go out and "run the crap out of it" This is against the law and against common sense.

Randomly hot rodding a performance car is absolutely taboo. It's a good way to get into trouble fast not only with the customer, but the police don't care for it either.

Now, to finish this. Yes I drive my customers cars. I have to. How else am I going to know what is going on. I just do it carefully within the constraints of the posted speed limits and common sense.

As far as your transfer case, What if the new one was as bad as the old one? It can happen. What if you took it and noticed a whine you did not have before? It's happened to all of us at one time or another.

Remember, new stands for Never Ever Worked before.

Good Luck in you endeavors

i completely agree with your method, except for the fact that mitsubishi admitted that the one in his car has something wrong with it, so a simple replacement is all that is needed... its like if i sold you something and told you that some part of that thing didnt work... easy fix, if it still doesnt work, then your in trouble, but mitsu told us all something the day they released that recall... that message being: shit be f*ed up on your car, fix it now...

I did not mean to criticize all mechanics or even all dealership techs, so I appologize if i came across that way. This dealership has a shady reputation locally but it was the only one in town I could take my car to.

As I was in the wrong in accusing them of blowing my head gasket I fully intend to appologize to the tech directly as well as the supervisors I spoke to. I think I'll buy some new shoes before I go though so they taste better as I eat them.

Thanks for the write up.

Incidentally, if they'd taken me with them on the drive, like you do, none of this would have been an issue.

Thanks for the great info on tranfer case recalls. My 95 talon siezed up - it's already had the transfer case recall done. Do I have any aftermarket options for better built transfer case assemblies (ones that won't leak).

Please include a website link to the company if you have it.

Thanks for the great info... :talon:

no problem on the info, thats what we are here for, as for an Aftermarket T-Case, I've never heard of them, Just OEM for that, and if you would replace with an AF T-case would't be covered under the recall, Ive had my done 3 times now, so far this one is holding up.

The case doesn't leak, it's the yoke that slides into the back of it for the driveshaft that leaks. It had a brass plug that plugs a hole needed to machine the yoke. Sheppard and www.teamrip.com may have beefed up internal cases available that are stock cases and will have the same yoke. Keep an eye for leaks(it throws oil onto the exhaust and underside of the body, think there are pics here or on www.vfaq.com) and check the case fluid to prevent the major problem you have. A new oem case would be out of sight for cost. Check with Sheppard as I heard he offered beefed internal cases for $1000. Noy sure of his addy. Good luck. Mark

what does everybody here think. beginning of this week my tcase locked up and i slid to a stop doing about 50. luckily i didnt get hit from behind because there wasnt any traffic. i got it towed to the garage i work at and i chanegd the tcase with a spare i have. the spare works but it clicks and clatters and so im not driving it. the yoke did leak on the last one but i hadnt read about the recall yet so i thought it was just the seal and i just kep topping it off.

when i pulled off the seized tcase it was almost empty but im sure it lost some as it failed because it kinda chewed up the shaft on the driveshaft yoke.

to further complicate things mine is a eagle and not a mitsu LOL. what do you think my best bet is for getting mitsu to give me a new tcase and yoke? i don't care about the labor

sorry to ask such a dumb question, i've got an 93 eagle talon tsi awd, blah obviously my t=case is leaking and crap. but do i have to call chrysler or do i call mitsu? i've been going thru mitsu for 2 years now (had a 2g eclipse and i figure this is just like an eclipse)....plus i don't even know of any chrysler dealerships around here.....hmmmm....

If you have a Chrysler vehicle (eagle talon or plymouth laser) you have to go through Chrysler when doing a recall. Only Eclipse owners can go through Mitusubishi for their recalls. The reason for this is that Chrysler made money on your vehicle when the original owner bought it, so for any item that is recalled, they are also responsible for paying for it. I hope this has been clear for you, good luck with your claim.

yeah i found that out today LOL. i went to manchester mitsu today and was informed of that by a service manager. he also called up bonnevile (closest chrysler dealer) and asked them about the recall, etc. they told him the recall was done on my car in 98 when it was put out. i haven't called them personally and he didn't obviously get into it at all with them. but nonetheless i do think they are going to give me a problem with it...but my mom is a real b**** when it comes to stuff like that (LOL yes i said my mom). so hopefully i get it done.

also, when i drive, usually at low speeds i here this weird sound, its not totally constant but the sound happens in intervals at a set time depending on how fast im going, almost as if it might be my drive shaft or something at a certain point of a revolution....and today when i was driving thru a parking lot i swear i could like a clicking/ticking sound (and it wasn't my motor)....if anyone could help me and tell me whether this might be due to my transfer case having insufficient lubricant let me know. also i first noticed this spraying on my exhaust about a month ago....:notgood: :notgood:

Mine leaks, so I went to the dealer and they said it was done in 98 and the dealer where it was done has to warranty it for 1 year. So they said I was out of luck.
I called Mitsu and they said the same thing and then I called NATHA and they agreed with Mitsu
So what do I do?
I live in Montgomery, AL so if anyone knows who I need to talk to please let me know.

I just picked up a 1991 AWD gsx eclipse, and the transfer case is grinding.. bad ... I was recently on the website and noticed a recall on the transfer cases.. can someone further explain the recall? if i am the third owner, will there be any problems with me getting them to honor the recall, i am 95% sure that the car has not had a recall issued on it.. it has been sitting for 4 years now due to Transfer case and ECU problems.. any help would be very appreciated.

thanks

Ray

i didnt really see much on this... but i have a 1999 gsx and i just wanna kno if the recall applies here... i went to the dealer the other day, the guy looked up my vin and said there was nothing. i told him i had checked my xfer case fuild a few days ago and that it was completly empty... he replies with, "well... its only supposed to happen on 3000GT's"

so ya now im stuck.
