I got a question for you guy... Lets say you have a setup like mine where your car started life as an AWD Automatic and you have done a A/T to M/T swap. How would you get them to do the recall? VIN wouldnt match the current xfer case.

I currently have my xfer case off. Can I just take it into the dealer with the VIN from the parts car is came from?

Any suggestions?

Read Post #157 Its hard to say because its really up to each individual dealer wether or not they will do it out of the car. Most probably won't, but if the transfercases were swaped (Im not sure if they are diffrent between the auto and manual) you would need a VIN that said you had a manual tranny. But then its still up to the dealer.

The recall coversautomatics also. They said the recall was done on mine in '98 when I gave then the vin & said only once because mine is leaking now. I aid it had to be done to the cr due to it being a safety recall and wa told no. I did not want to get into a hssle. i bought a new yoke andseal for around $80. and will cover the plug before it goes into the transfercase when the fluid is changedback to Redline Shockproof in the spring. i hve kept tabs on the transfer case fluid level so it is fine. I have even seen the "recallkit" for as little as $39.99 for the yoke, seal and the U-joint. Must be an Asian copy becuse Mitsu gets $89. for the U-joint alone. That I'll get aftemarket. I prefer to use OEM whan I can. Mark

Yes I know the recall cover automatics too. What I was saying is my car USED TO BE an automatic. I've done a 5 speed swap so now I have a 5 speed transfer case but my VIN still reflects the fact I have a automatic so the stuff won’t match up.

I found a local DSM who works for the local Mitsubishi dealer. He is going to get me a bunch of parts at there cost this week so well I'm down there tomorrow ordering stuff I'm going to ask him to see if he can do anything about this x-fer case. Maybe I can get him to fill out the paperwork so the district manager won’t know the difference.

Hell I'm going to ask if he can just bullshit and say the x-fer case is ####ed and order me a new one. I know it leaks badly either way. I can even put the thing on myself so they won’t have to mess with the labor.

Post 130, just one page back, explained why you cannot get your auto-gone-5spd t-case covered. But here it again for those who are too lazy to scroll back.

Parts are ordered based on VIN, Recalls are based on VIN, and only the part listed in the recall, FOR THAT VIN, can be ordered to replace the parts currently in the car. The manufacturer will not pay the claim if the VIN and part numbers don't match up.

The dealership SHOULD NOT give you the parts to put in the car. Reason being is that only the dealership has training and PERMISSION to replace the recall parts in question. As such they assume a HUGE liability for the repair. Hypothetical situation would be that you get the part and put it in, sell the car, part falls out because you put it in wrong, car crashes and Mary and her two year burn to death in a very slow and agonizing manor. Dealership took credit for doing the recall, they got paid for the part and the labor to put it in. Now the dealership gets sued because they were too incompetent to put the part in and you get out scott free when it was really your fault that Mary and her two year old resemble a skeletal frame with a few strips of beef jerky left for flesh.

Has anyone actually bothered to read this thread or do you all just see "Transfer Case" and assume that you're the only person out there with a bad one???

That was sorta funny but you missed the point of what I wanted to do here.

We have ANOTHER CAR... A 92 GSX 5 speed blah blah... It has always been a 5 speed. Its a parts car. The xfer case in question came from this car.

Infact I just got off the phone witht his kid who works at the local dealer. Here is what he said he can try to work out for me.

He is going to talk to there service manager and try to use the 5speed VIN parts car to get the recall ok'ed for me. He said if the service manager ok's it, he will write it up so it looks like the xfer case took undo wear due to the leak and tell MHI the whole xfer case needs to be replaced. If they ok it, I'll throw him like $50 bucks for his trouble. He said he can even install it right there at the dealership for me if MHI ok's the recall. He said they will have known way to know the parts car isn't the one in question and the VIN is the right one for the xfer case in question.

I'll know tomarrow if his service manager ok's it. He said he thinks he should because they are good friends and he ok's his total xfer case replacement recall and his wasn't even that bad he just wanted a new one.

Won't know until tomarrow though.

Yep I'm getting a new x-fer case. They guy I spoke to got the ok from his manager.

I have to give him the case though and let him take it into work. I'm not suppose to tell anyone at the local dealer ever either and if I ever have issues with it again, he said I need to come to him directly, not the dealer.. Sounds like they dont know its not for him or one of his DSM's from the way he talked. He did ask for the VIN off my parts car though so who knows.

Owell, works for me.

this is not what you think, bear with me

The dealer can check to see if it's been done. The odds are real high it has been but given the age of these cars you should be checking the transfer case fluid as a part of your regular schedule along with the trans, diff, etc.

The recall was for a seal in the yoke on the driveshaft that fit into the transfer case that leaked causing the transfer case to go dry and lock up if not checked. As part of the recall they changed the yoke and the seal on the case or replaced the case if it looked to have been damaged. I know people are still getting these fixed occasionally but a lot of people seem to think this is an extended warenty on the transfer case and it's not. There are plenty of other ways for the TC to die including wearing out and none of them would be covered.

Damn mine locked up today! Not good. I called the dealer across from my work and they said the recall has never been done yet and I have an appt. next wed. I hope they fix it for free.

We should have a list of dealers by state that people had the recall done so others can use that dealership without being hassled. This way we can find the good/bad dealers.

I'll let you know what happens.

Dude if it locked you will have no issues getting it replaced. They have to replace it or service it and if its locked, its beyond servicing. They will replace it.

How fast were you going when it locked up?

Luckily I was only going about 25mph. Scared the crap out of me. I just bought it and it was only my 3rd day driving it. 5 minutes before I was saying to myself how nice the car drives,LOL. Thanks to this site I am learning more and more about these cars. I'm just scared that they will try and get out of replacing the transfer case. How long does it usually take the dealer to get one in ?

As far as I know they cant get it out of replacing it because its a safty recall. Now I know alot of the times when the seals leak and people want new x-fer cases they will try to get out of replacing them and just do a yoike and seal replacement which they can do under the recall but if you locked it then they must replace it.

Stand your ground and do what this thread says. Mine started leaking and they ran my VIN and said it had been done. I argued a bit over the safety being lifelong and then bought a yoke and seal to fix it. Mark

So here is the story. I noticed my car making a funny noise the other day, it was deffiently drivetrain oriented. So I begin to check my fluids and I find that my transfer case fluid is very low. So after I fill it up, I take it around the block to see how it drives. Everything seem normal, so when I got back to my house, I could see little black drips of oil on my driveway. I check under my car and see that all the fluid is coming out of the transfer case. So I make a call to my dealer, and they tell me to bring it in on monday, so I do first thing in the morning. Later one on that I get a call that it is the recall, and it will take a couple of days to get the part in. Thursday, comes around and still no part yet, they tell me that it is on the way from ups and will be here first thing in the morning. Friday morning(today), I get a call at work and they tell me the part came in, however the input bearing has gone, so now they need chryslers apporval to replace the transfer case and if they do get it, it will take another 5 TO 10 BUSINESS DAYS TO GET IT IN. I was patient at first, but I need my car. Are they trying to give me the runaround or do these things normally happen. Any advice would be greatly appericated. Sorry for such a long story.

Sounds reasonalbe to me. They are just following procedures. May want to talk with the serivce manager and explain your situation about needing your car back to drive it. Be nice and maybe he will expidte the situation or see if they can get you a loaner or rental since it is a recall and Mitsu's fault.

It's only a $800 job if it were the trans then it will cost around $3000 :) The transfer case is on manual order and Chrysler and Mitsu have to have case # to get them! Should take less than a week to get it though! Good luck!

I have a 1990 talon that is awd but what do i do to find out if it is under the recall just call the dealership and give them the vin or what...also is there a place online to check it cause the closest dealership is over an hour away from me

OK, I brought my car to Warnock Dodge/Chrysler in East Hanover, NJ. They replaced the t-case with a brand new one and I didnt have to pay a dime. It took 12 days total and they were great no questions asked.
Thanks for your help guys.

Just got mine back for the 2nd time for recall 780  They did it in 2003 when i got it, so i thought they did it right, well i was wrong, had my shift kit /end clutches installed, and my friend told me that at the yoke was leaking and it was never replaced, they replaced the Tcase but not the yoke and the u-joint, so 16 days latter i got it back, I still have a question for DSC, will be calling them tomorow.. New tcase/yoke/u-joint looks good :thumb:

Ok I have sent this same message to two of the moderators/wisemen hoping to get a quick response. I sent it to them because I know they are knowledgable and will give me a quick response, however I would also like to hear from everyone else in case anyone else has had a similar situation.

I brought my car into the Tallahassee Dodge Jeep Chrysler dealer and they told me that the transfer case is leaking and that they would do the recall on it. However they also said that the " tail spline " was leaking as well. They described this piece as the part of the transfer case that houses the yolk. They said it will take about a week to get in and that it will cost $230 plus the $40 for one hour of labor. They said that they will do the recall but if the other repair is not done that the fluid will still leak. I told them to order the " tail spline " but I have not given them any money yet. They said this piece is not covered by the recall. Are they correct? What should I do? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. I type in " tail spline " into the search but it came back negative. I'm sure there is a more technical name for it, could you help me out there. Please help asap.

from me having my tcase done twice, the only things that ive heard that are covered under the recall is the Tcase, Yoke and the U-joint that connects to the Yoke, any thing other not sure, but i would call DSC at 1800 853 1403 and talk with some one there. Good luck.

i called them and then one of the people connected with the dealership my car is at. the service guy said that the part on my car that is broken is totally unrelated to the recall. this part... the "tail spline" or so they call it is the piece that houses the yolk. so... isnt that related then. its in the transfer case and is directly related to the yolk

Tyler

p.s. does anyone know the real name for the part im talking about? it costs about $230 book price.
