Yesterday the co-owner of my (our) Talon noticed a hole in the top of our transfer case. We hadn't noticed any problems but he could tell something was missing. He figured it would be best to plug the hole until we can atleast figure out what it is. Today I found out that it was the air breather. Apparently whatever was supposed to be there was completely missing, either that or it's supposed to be wide open? How does that work? If we are missing a part, is it a dealer only type deal? Anyone have a part number? Also, how big of a deal is it to not have the breather? Should it be left open temporarily or plugged?

Thanks...

Just a breather hole. It normally has a little black rubber "mushroom" looking plug that allows air in and out as pressure inside the case changes. I have used a small black rubber cap from Autozone (like you would use to cap off a vacuum line with, etc.). Place a small slit in one side so air can go in and out but water or dirt is not allowed easy entry. There is one on the manual tranny as well. Probably one on the automatic but I don't have one of those to go look.

I remember when i took my vr-4 for a recall at mitsu, they replaced this piece, they told me that the tcase can leak out of there if there is no breather. But I dont know how true that is, its the stealership for crying out loud ROFL
