Well, my transmission is making a rapid "knocking" or "clicking" noise. When I push in the clutch, all the way, the noise will stop and everything sounds perfectly fine. When I let out, or release the clutch, it will start to make the noise again. 2 days ago I replaced the fluid with exactly 2 quarts.

The transmission also likes to grind when I downshift into 2nd gear. Which isn't good because every turn I make I have to let it slow way down so I can go into first.

It sounds as if I have bad synchros and the throw out bearing could be bad. Time for a new tranny. What do you guys think?

Sounds more like a transmission rebuild is in order. You likely have worn out tapered roller bearings and a few chipped gears. Because of the freeplay from the worn out tapered roller bearings (it is likely that it is the intermediate shaft inner bearing or the input shaft inner bearing; my hunch is the intermediate shaft one), you will have difficulties shifting and selecting gears. Essentially the gearsets are pushing away from each other either laterally or vertically.

Either way, it is time for the transmission to be pulled. It is not worth driving on it anymore, as it will only become worse, and will be more expensive to rebuild.

It does not sound like the throwout bearing as the main cause for your problems, BUT it could be. You wil find out more when you remove the transmission and inspect the throwout bearing.

As well, the transmission takes around 2.4-2.5 quarts of gear oil. When it is properly filled, it will be at the point of weeping out of the fill hole. You can also fit your finger in there and check fluid level after you have over 2 quarts in it.

yes some bearings are shot or about to be in your tranny. The fact is that when you've got the clutch floored, everything stop rolling in the tranny so this is why no more sounds are generated by the tranny. open it up and look for every conical bearings and cage on each shaft, espacially on the input shaft

Ok thanks guys. Considering I'm no tranny specialist, I'll be removing it soon and taking it to a tranny shop and see what they say. Maybe I'll look into shep's trannys

Well, I'm replacing it. Do you guys know if Shep's Stage 1 will support a 12 second car? Or should I go stage 2? 12 seconds is my goal.

I would drop the trans before you start to think the worse. When you get outside the car is it closer to the flywheel or closer to the body of the trans. It could be a wore our pressure plate finger that streched back and your TOB is clicking on it or it could be a broken fork. Im just realize the worst that can happen but also realize the simple stuff...

i had this same prob...1 week later my tranny blew and the only gear i had left was 3rd. i bought a new tranny from mitsu and sent it out to shep and got a stage 3 build with it. they were glad to see a brand new/ clean tranny to work on. anyways yeah sounds like a rebuild is in order. dont slam the gears or launch it...or itll be on a flatbed on the way home

How's Stage 3? How much did that whole situation cost you?

Just go to Shep's site. He has the pricing on the transmission rebuild page for NEW transmissions and for rebuilding used transmissions listed on his webpage.

Well i live right next to TRE and he did a stage 2 for less than 1300 with a tig weld and new 2nd gear...rebuild

i bought a brand new tranny from mitsu and had them send it strait to shep. then they sent it back to me...do all the other work myself

Alright, thanks. I think I'll be taking it to a tranny shop first and I'll see what they say. I can't access this site from my house, its saying "shared IP adress" when I go to dsmtuners.com so I can only access this from the library or school. I'll be giving an update soon

I'd check the TOB first before you start freaking about the trans itself. Granted it might have notchy syncros, but you still could drive it if needed.

I'd bet it's the TOB because when you load the TOB (Clutch disengaged) it's OK, but with the clutch out (unloaded TOB) it's noisy. I've had several TOB do this. Even when the clutch is out the TOB can be rotating slowly due to friction. It might not be at engine speed, but it can rotate.

+1, happened to my wife's 3g eclipse.

I thought it might have been the TOB, just wasn't sure.
I have another question.
What transmissions will fit the 1991 Talon tsi awd?
As in, will a 2g tranny work? How about the 1gb trannys?
If someone could give me exact years/model number on the trannys to which ones will fit and what modifications I would have to do on the different transmission to get it working.
Thank you.

I have had 2 problems with noise like that. People said it sounded like my car was trying to transform.LOL

One time a finger off my pressure plate broke.

Another time, my transmission was bad, gears were all chewed up. However, in this instance, the noise didn't go away with the clutch and vise versa. It did with the first problem thou.

Well to add to this thread we had very similar problems and i got the chance to drop my tranny yesterday and somehow one of the bolts for my pressure plate came loose which made the fingers come out alittle which in turn but crazy stress on the TOB which made it(TOB) explode.... It literally was a CAD design in exploded view in my tranny LOL...

Well i had bought new TOB and clutch fork but not the c clip that holds them together and when my TOB blew up i lost my clip so i had to drive to 99gst_racer house to pick up the clip... but sorry to jack the thread but dont always think the worse but the guys that posted do know there stuff..

pretty much any 23 spline(from 91-99) tranny will work but you being awd i would have to check an make sure that the diff didn't change in 2gs... I know 2g trannys can go into a 1g with a simple mod(pull off the mounting bracket on the top of the tranny)...

Oh, there was no "jacking" of this thread at all. All the info helps.
I thought I had a 23 spline but I wasn't sure.

By diff, are you talking about the transfer case or the rear diff? Sorry, I'm not sure, I've pulled a tranny off of a FWD 93 Talon which isn't that hard because there's no transfer case. Thanks Viperlp01

Ya you should have a 23 spline... The question is the rear diff. I know the autos and manuals are diff...

He's talking about the front differential. AWD + FWD cars have them in the transaxle to distribute torque to the front wheels.

The rear diff? That shouldn't matter should it? I mean as long as the whole transfer case hooks up correctly, then the rear differential shouldn't matter. Now this guy is saying you're talking about the Front Differential? WTF
Anyway, whenever I'm done being sick I'm going to pull this tranny. Something tells me its going to be the TOB.

Well if the front wheels are spinning at a rate say 1:1 and the read diff is getting its signal from the driveshaft and the rear wheels are spinning at the same one turn or the shaft to one turn of the tire you can get some serious stress issues in there...

Thats all im saying but you should be fine. I mean i have heard it being done quite a bit...

sorry that really makes no sense but atleast you made sense of it LOL... I want to rephrase it but im lazy right now

Oh ok I understand now. Thanks for the help viper.
