I have this problem w/ my car (95 GSX auto) since yesterday and my gf has it also (92 GS auto). I put my car into drive and it drives for around 1 minute and then acts like its in neutral after that. I'm in drive but i can rev up the motor like im in neutral and it dosn't move. Someone told me it might be the tranny solenoid but I was wondering if anybody knows what this could be caused by?

From what i've gather with 2 dead auto tranny's its possible the friction pads in your trans, which act like clutch discs are worn out, or your tourqe convertor could be shot. Check the fluid first of all though, then if its at normal smell it to see if its burned (smells like shitty seafood burned) Check the fluid properly, car at normal temps, running, cycle through gears first then put in neutral, check fluid.

It sounds like something is falling apart in your transmission and clogging up the filter.

What happens in this case is that all of the debris falls out of the filter when you shut it off, so when you restart it you will able to drive it for a short period until the filter clogs again.

You can change the filter and gasket, but this is a very temporary fix- the source of the debris that is being made needs to be addressed.

Same thing happened to me. I upgraded to a Level 10 high stall torque converter. After driving it 100 miles it started doing that. You can get going for about a minute and then the car doesn't go anywhere after that. I remember that for some reason I could shut the car off, quick turn it on and gun it for about a minute. I had to keep doing that to get the car home. Well basically it was the torque converter. I threw a stock one back in and my tranny was fine.

Doesn't sound like an "upgrade" to me :)

well instead of trying to guess what it is and buying parts that I don't need I took it to the Mitsu Dealer and for $85 they will tell me exactly what it is. However, I'm suspecting its the torque converter also. My domestic friend said that he has had that several times w/ several domestics and it was always the converter going. I'm hoping its the converter, b/c if its all the clutches inside a tranny shop will charge me up the A$$, 1500+. I will post tommorow on the final verdict of what is going on w/ my tranny. Thanks for the help.

Dealer tech took out my dipstick, smelled it, and said all the small clutch discs inside are fried and the torque converter also. So the only thing to do is remove the tranny and get another. Just bought a GSX 95 auto tranny for 1K.

The reson I am not rebuilding is b/c it will be more expensive, like 1.5K plus compared to 1K for a tranny w/ a 1 year warranty.
