neutral - drive in valve body?

does any know what the exact function of this is ? my tranny seemed to slip/ go into neutral at anything more than 1/4 throttle....i pulled the valve body today and found the the spring at the end of this valve was all twisted up in the valve body bore making it stick/hang... anyone know what this valve does exactly?
