Well first, my gears have been feeling kind of "notchy" lately so i've been searching and decided to drain my tranny and replace it with some Pennzoil Synchromesh. I crawled under my car though and saw my fill cap in the front but i looked for my drain plug "according to vfaq's pics" and it seems to be located towards the rear of the tranny and not as close to the fill cap as it seemed in the pictures.. It's the only 24mm bolt around there so i'm certain that it's the drain plug.

That made me start wondering though. Is the fill cap 100% for sure on the tranny towards the front of the car. or could it be located on the backside of the tranny above the drain plug?
The only reason i'm asking is because it seems like the guy before me had the fluids replaced when he put in the new engine block (roughly 30k maybe 40K ago) and it looks like a chocolate bar exploded on the backside of my tranny.. WTF(i'm assuming they used a gear oil pump and it sprayed the surrounding areas..)

What do you guys think?
Fill cap on the back side of the tranny along with the drain plug?
or is it indeed the bolt of the front of the tranny and the drain plug just happens to be more towards the rear?

I'll try to get some pics posted up here soon.. :thumb:

Thanks again! :dsm:

dont know about the 2g but mine has the fill bolt in the front and the drain hole on the right side below the axle

I figured out that the fill plug is indeed in the front. but i still believe that the drain plug is towards the rear of the tranny and facing towards the right..
can anybody verify that?

:rocks:

Here are pictures of both the fill and drain plugs. Make sure you have the right size wrench for the drain plug otherwise you'll strip it since it's a shallow head bolt.

Are you sure its transmission fluid (or gear oil etc etc.) If you have smelled the oil before that should be a sure way to tell :D

i have no idea what it is.. LOL it's not regular motor oil. so my next guess was transmission fluid. but im honestly not that familiar with trans fluid.. so i'm open to all suggestions LOL
that's why i tried to describe what it looked like. :p

Yea fill bolt is the one on the front
on a 1g awd the drain bolt is in the front of the tranny but on the bottom not the back like those pics?

I just refilled my fluid with more of the syncromesh and somehow over torqued my fill bolt last previous change, so I managed to strip it like a dumbass trying to take it off with wrong size socket I guess and this was after I already had drained all the fluid out of the tranny...

So I was stumped for a little bit wondering how Im going to refill this tranny back up with fluid and I ended up having to fill the tranny at the damn overfill hole on the very top of the tranny near the passenger side axle . ( That hole on the top with the rubber gromet sticking out of it.)

It actually ended up being easier to fill up there than at the actual fill bolt. Idk if there is any thing wrong with filling it from there but when I loosened up the drain bolt again there was fluid trying to come out so I just closed it back up confirming it had reached the bottom. LOL
