Hey My 93 1g, I lost the front bellhousing bolt, caused my bellhousing to eventually crack.
Got it welded put 6k miles on it, then lost the bolt again.
Just replaced it, did 60 miles and the bolt backed halfway out. Luckily the bellhousing didnt crack. :banghead:

Whats causing this? Motor mounts? Too much vibration?

Anyone run into this problem before?:banghead::banghead::banghead:

Vibration is the most likely cause of it to back out. That and not tight enough. Install it with a lock washer and put some lock-tite on the threads and tighten it down good.

For the 6k miles I had not lock washer. Then after it fell out, I installed the new bolt with a lock washer, tightened the shit out of it. 60 miles later its halfway out. My car does vibrate wicked bad, I don't know what it is, its mostly when I accelerate. Everything in the car seems to be vibrating, seat belts, rear view mirror, doors. Pisses me off.

if you don't have the tiny bolt in the back m8x1.25 all the bolts will work loose. thats how i blew up a disc on a stock car after 400 miles.. it could have been saved if i knew anything back in the day but still lesson learned.

I've had fantastic luck with locktite red. Stops vibrations. Let it sit a good while before operating the car, as it needs to cure. Good luck man!

Thanks for the quick replies guys. I have all the bolts, small one too, and dowel pins in. Im gonna try locktite next, but what the heck, I got stock mounts too. My 90 1g, the only vibration was from the exhaust rubbing a little. Smooth as heck at 100.

I wanted to trade it for a hatch or something, get outta the dsm game for awhile. But those kids are afraid of dsm's. So im going to the track on their meet day n gonna smoke em. Im curious to know if this problem is unusual or not, I searched and couldnt find anything.

What tiny bolt are you guys talking about? I just put my tranny back up and realized there are only 3 bolts holding her onto the block (2 more from the tranny mount to the chassi). There is one hole towards the back of the block that is threaded on the engine side but not threaded on the tranny side (just under the starter), what goes there? Are most 1g's like this?

Umm hope I'm not thread jacking, my bad.

The bolt that projekt is talking about is notorious for backing out with no forseen cause. I had a 94 AWD with a JDM powerplant and mine backed out multiple times. The first time my axle was loose and I drained all my fluid 65 miles away from my house. With no tools on a Sunday night.

It backs out for no reason. I used super glue and washers. I later sold the car....

Yeah I hope my balance shaft belt is fine. I mean I put almost 20k on the car since I had it the past two years and it has been like that since I bought it. The vibration got better after I put my new downpipe on, but the Downpipe still is real tight at the flex pipe section, think it could be the exhaust?

Are both tranny dowels installed? I had the same issue since I missed installing a dowel. This was causing the tranny to barely flex when releasing the clutch. Once I installed the missing dowel she doesn't back out.

i would make sure motor balancing mechanizms are in good working order and i would also check driveshafts for wear or bend before going to far with the car at all. alot of undo vibration will start making everything else fall apart too!! i have a full urathane mount and suspension kit and also have torque limiters front and rear of motor that cause a ton of vibration and had to put locktite on everything!!! and i mean everything!!! it all started coming apart!!

I had this issue once when I put my tranny up. Though my starter bolts backed out. I got brand new bolts, loctited them, and torqued them down. Haven't had an issue since and my engine vibrates at around 4K due to a balance shaft.

Just loctite and torque. Don't use a ratchet, you can never get enough pressure on a bolt with one of those and your hands.

just make sure you torque it to spec and its all gravy

Red loctite aint' coming off without a torch. I use it on the flywheel bolts and if a bolt were ever to back off, it would be one of these. Stuff works great.

Back in the day when I was a n00b, I would work on my DSM and not really be aware of what I was doing, I would put shit back together with greasy bolts, and I had shit fall apart on me.

Now, Every bolt is cleaned and inspected before I bolt everything back up, and I have had no "gremlens" taking my engine apart on me anymore.

my $0.02

+2 i almost lost a motor due to me putting the tensioner arm bolt back in with oil on the threads, it backed out almost all the way but i heard it and luckly had the time to tear it apart that night.

Yea I've also had that smaller bolt back out on me as well. I lost the bolt entirely and it worked the rest loose from not being present. I was at the track and sheared the sleeve my TOB rides on right off (during a burnout). Need a new bell housing now. I also had this bolt installed with red loctite and it still eventually came out.

Best bet for you would be buy a new one with fresh threads. Lockwasher and red loctite.

That sucks, last year my buddy did the same thing. Went to the track and that bolt backed out and one of the tops loosened I guess since the bottom was out. Cracked his bellhousing on a launch.
