I just purchased a 1995 Eclipse GSX, and did a minor tune up...oil change GTX 10W-40, Fram oil filter, and installed new NGK spark plugs. My problem is that after driving it for about 15 miles the car made noise that seemed to be coming from the top end. Could it be valves or valve springs? Any suggestions will be much appreciated; I have been an eclipse addict for over ten years, but I am still in the learning process, my previous eclipse was a 420A RS model. Any suggestions? :coy:

Well the noise sounded like a knocking, but you would only here it when the rpm was above 3K, and at idle it would stay quite. Then after driving it for the second time the engine cut out, and had to push it up my drive way, but before the engine cut out it was like a clanking sound also the exhaust manifold was glowing red....and so know it wont start at all. It will try to crank...and sounds like it has compression but not starting now. Could it be the valves or valve springs???

I thought fram filters were proven?...why make the change?

Check your timing belt and marks, a glowing exhaust mani is not good.

If you look at the link I posted, you can see the reason to get rid of the fram.

I can see the timing may be a possibility, and a fram filter may not be the best; But I have known of other people that ran fram filters and never had problems...any other suggestions?...I looked at the bottom of the top end and it seems the gasket has moved...could that be my problem?

Not to be the bearer of bad news, but it sounds like you may have spun a rod bearing, and possibly a thrown rod. Normally with a spun rod bearing the clattering sound is only heard in certain RPM ranges under power. I could be wrong, but I doubt it. As for the glowing manifold that could be the byproduct of why the rod bearing spun... low oil pressure = excess friction.

I hope I'm wrong. Good luck friend.

Take out the filter, check your timing, try running thinner oil, and check coolant temp housing and sensors.
Sounds odd, but Dsm's are something else. haha

so if a spun rod is the case...I may as well pull the motor and build it up again right?...It was making that sound when I purchased the gsx but it only made that wierd noise at a high rpm...at idle it sounded quite...and now it doesn't even turn over...if I through a rod...would you recommend buying a crate engine with all the forged parts all ready to go or should I just rebuild my current motor with rebuilt forged internals?

If you want to check for rod knock try taking out one spark plug wire at a time and rev the engine. If the noise goes away on a cylinder you maybe have rod knock. I had rod knock on an engine and tested it this way, also when I revved the engine up it would make a terrible scraping noise..

I thought i spun a rod bearing too. turned out to be the harmonic balance. however i don't think that is your case. and don't risk your entire car over a cheap ass filter. fram is 6 bucks? Royal purple/k&n filter $12. Not worth 6 bucks to me.

I would say before trying to start it up again, turn the motor by hand. Check to see if it turns the full 360*. If not, motors gotta come out. But also check what others have posted. I'm in agreement.

If you spun a rod bearing you might be alright to go ahead and fix it. You'll have to tear it down and look at it your crank may be worn to bad or your rods could be worn. But I agree, it sounds like you have low oilpressure. Could be the oil pump is bad

no or low oil pressure may have been the source for the rod bearing failure. As stated above, If you cannot turn the motor over by hand 360* then you have a rod binding up. If you spun a rod bearing you could simply drain the oil and there should be metallic particals left. Another possibility would be a bad wrist pin. Wrist pin failure is quiet at idle but gets super loud at W.O.T. an any case, whats for sure is that its a bottom end issue not top end( well as of yet anyway)Most likely your case is a rod bearing failure though. Everyone has given great advice on how to check this out. You wil just have to do a little work to find out.
