Yes, that's what I have in mine. It's from a 1.8l Eclipse DL.
How hard was the change over? My p/s is leaking very large amounts of fluid from everywhere, so i want to go over to a manual rack.

yeah, they want 175 for the manual rack...thats too much. I think the local junk yard has some dsm's in it. Tomarow im picking up a coil, so Im gonna see if I can't find any m/r.

I ran a 1.8 manual rack for a year and a half, daily driven, with 245 Kumho MXs. The only time it was bad was parallel parking, due to the number of turns lock to lock.
I also open tracked it a couple times. It gives much better road feel IMO.
Don't spend more than $100 on one.

I am now thinking of doing this, after reading this thread. Is there anything I should look for when getting a manual rack to tell wether it's in good or bad shape? Or do these things really not go bad?

It's a piece of cake w/ the engine out. I took me less than an hour. With the engine in it is a bit tougher but by no means impossible. The only added difficulty is getting the steering shaft seperated from the rack.

If you pay over $100 dollars for one, before you install it you might as well screw your self w/ it so you get the full effect of being raped OMG .

I left the power steering belt off my car for a couple of weeks after doing the 6 bolt swap (becuase I didn't have one that fit) so I got used to driving without it. when I put the belt back on I nearly wrecked because the first thing I did was try to change lanes and torqued the wheel like I used too OMG PS rocks :thumb:

Grab the tie rods and pull on them while holding the rack in place, if they have play the inner joint is worn out. Also turn the rack and make sure there is no point that binds.

will the tie rods from a p/s car fit the manual rack stuff? Or do i need the whole thing? Sorry just trying to get an actual idea of all what ill be needing if i decide to do this.

Anyone got pics of everything needed to convert?

If my pump leaks, I can just add fluid and I'm good to go.
If my rack leaks, does it share fluid with the pump resevoir or not?

Basically...if I have a small leak, and I loop the lines without swapping in a new(used) rack, could I have fluid issues later on?

And is it possible to loop the lines without altering the fittings and such? I've driven with no belt on before and I didn't think it was that big of a deal. I'd like to loop the lines and see how I like it, but it would be nice to be able to revert to stock form if I needed to.

Thanks,
Jon

One of my goals when I drop in a 6 bolt is to find a way to bolt up a 1g manual rack. If someone could sucessfully do that they would be my personal hero.

You guys pulling your PS must have forearms like Popeye or want them! My 1850lb. Festiva is not a joy in the city and I weigh 230. Then you loose the quick ratio steering also right? It's not for weight savings, no extra power, what's it all about? I have a friend ho pulled the AC from his '70 Mustang Mach 1 and I know PS ain't AC but they do add value to the car and eliminate females when it comes time to sell. Mark

Well it is for weight, 20+lbs. And essentially it does free up a little power by not working the pump. But it also improves the feel at high speeds. At least my car got rather twitchy at 100+mph.

Well, I'm just too cushy. I would not go without my PS or AC even though I don't like AC I want my car's options to work. 20 lbs. can save .02 in the 1/4 and I hope the 100+ is on the track. I've done my share of high speeds on public roads and and regret some even though thank God nothing happened. I wish you guys luck who are changing the PS out and look foreward to your comments after some time without it. Peace. Mark

I drove a 2g with the PS disconnected from Los Angeles to Toronto. I can tell you that at low speeds it sucked and became a nuisance very quickly. I wouldnt consider getting rid of PS without a manual rack.

I have no PS either. I bought the car without it. It doesnt have a man. steering rack, just cut lines on the other one. It takes a couple weeks to get used too and only really sucks when parking and backing out of a parking spot, 3 pt turns etc. I havent even wasteed my time trying to parallel park yet. Deffinetly feels like I just got done working out everytime I get out of the car.

Ill be putting it back soon as soon as I can get all the parts. I just like it better w/ power steering and feel more comfortable with it.

Well I finally got the car running again last night. First time driving with no power steering and I absolutely LOVE it!! It is NOT bad at ALL! All you guys saying how bad it was going to suck must have noodle arms. It gives the car a way more solid feel all around and it is deffinetely staying out.

I encourage all who are curious to at least try it.
