I have noticed that alot of dsmers have eliminated his or her power steering. Mine is causing more problems than what the thing is worth. So what is the correct way to eliminate the power steering I know that the power steering fluid is the lubricant for the power steering rack but is there a manual steering rack that i have to purchase or can i just fill the power steering rack with fluid and just plug it off. I'm not 100% sure because i cant find any products or information on how to do it.

There is a manual rack, you just have to look hard to find one. Ebay is a good place to start looking. I eliminated mine by just taking the pump and lines off.

and you don't have any problems with wear on the steering rack itself. Of course if it works ill try it because I don't see any reason to replace the steering rack if the stock one is fine i just worry about lubrication in steering rack itself manual steering racks just have grease inside like a cv axle. And in power steering racks the lubrication comes from the power steering fluid just like how the lubrication in an automatic transmission the tranny fluid lubricates the tranny. Is my thinking correct about that? Because i was thinking i could remove the pump and lines fill the power steering rack with fluid and block off where the lines went in so that the power steering fluid is stuck inside lubricating all the little parts inside. Correct or no?

It works just disconnecting it, but it gets alot harder to turn. If i remember right i have the two ports connected together with a hose.

k im prepared for it to be harder to turn but the leaking power steering pump isnt worth the comfort it gives me or the price that is charged for a new one. I have ran it without the ps pump connected and as long as the car has some movement i don't think the car is that bad. Ill get rid of it the next time im under the hood which i have to replace a slow leaking coolant hose I have just been adding water because i haven't had the time lately so it should be soon Ill let you know how it goes.

sorry it took so long to respond but i have been away from the comp for awhile just so every one searching this forum knows I went ahead and eliminated the power steering and the only problem i didn't really forsee (though it is very obvious). The car pulls a little harder to the outside a problem stronger in front wheel drive cars. So now I am just wishing for AWD:D thanks for the help 1badpurple

2G's dont have manual racks and they were never made so im not sure how youll get one. Most people just loop the line and keep some fluid in the rack. Be prepared for an arm struggle however.

there is a more correct way of doing it. if i am not mistaken there is a member that you can get a manual converted rack from, DECODER22 if i am not mistaken. or you can convert it your self using the "flying Miata mod" here which is what i am in the middle of doing to my car at the moment (helps when you have an extra rack lying around).

I picked up a spare rack today and I am in the process of pulling it apart to do that de-power mod to it. I'm up in Fort Wayne too, so shoot me a PM if you want me to do yours when I'm done. Are you on fw4g63.com? If not you should check it out.

hey kickerbeast, I would be interested in having my conversion done too, im lost at where im supposed to weld the torsion bar....I have already cut the slider crap out though. hmmm

Eliptical, I'm not sure about a torsion bar, but the goal is to cut out the center section so there is no pressure inside the rack. That make is easier than a looped rack because you are not just pushing the fluid back and forth inside the rack. I have not tried this on a 2g rack yet, so I don't know if it is different.

well ive alread cut the compression ring out, and put some red grease on the slide and the big slider shaft housing, so can i just throw it back together, center it up to where i marked the shaft to the rack, and throw back on my car?

Decoder told me i had to weld something, he might have been just pulling my leg, because last time i put it together, it seemed to work just fine spinning the gear, and I dont think torsion bars exist on our cars.

That is all I've even seen done and all I did on mine. Like I said, I've never done a 2g, but I don't see why you would need it. All you are doing is cutting the center out so it won't seal anymore and greasing for lubrication. Just make sure you plug up all of the holes for the lines so that you don't get any dirt in them.
