too rich for logic

okay as stated before i've got a 97 gst i just picked up with a 20g turbo and front mount and a few other mods that dont really matter,
when i first got it i tore a hole in the vac line that goes to the wastegate and like MEGAboosted, hit 30 psi, while driving it back i was watching my afr's. at 20-25 psi i was still reading 11:4 - 12:1 at wot... at first i thought no way, it must have fuel or tuning mods to run that rich on a 20g pushing that hard, well now im at a loss. here is what i've now verified visually.

turbo = 20g. possibly ebay, no shaft play spools fast, the flat spot on the compressor housing where say, a greedy turbo would have that rivited on id plate has stuff laser etched into it. it reads

"Turbocharger" "tdo5" "20g"

wideband is a an AEM

injectors are stock 450cc.

ecu is stock non-eprom 97 gts


fuel pump i have not yet pulled to examine but im thinking its either a big 255, or its going out, its loud. very loud.
could a 255 fuel pump alone keep my afr's rich at that boost?

the only other thing i can think is my wideband is just plain wrong because without fuel or tuning i dont see how i could possibly run rich at that psi.

thoughts?

(btw, fixed the vac problem and now running 10psi @ the same afr.

Somethings a little fishy. First of all, 20g's.. even knockoff 20g's (which yours is hence the "Turbocharger" etching) would overrun stock injectors. especially "20-25 psi" there's just no way... let alone running rich.. if all the above is true then that thing should be maxing out your injector duty like its it's job.

that's what i was thinking too, so there has to be a problem with the wideband then right? none of this makes sense...

Don't even worry about your BOV right now unless its got a boost leak...


Even with a bigger pump you'd still need bigger injectors to support that turbo. period.

Double check your injectors.. check your fuel pressure and post back..

I I'd the injectors and the seiral number on the side pulled up stock 450, they are silver with a black top. is it possible they have been modified internally? i know some of the subaru guys have done that with stock sti pink injectors

is there a shraider (sp) valve in the fuel line somewhere i could attach my gauge to?
 
First things first.. take it down to stock boost so you dont melt something. you should be leaningtout that's why I suggest to check to make sure theyre stock injectors. you can look up how to identify them on here. Stop doing WOT pulls until you find out what the missing link is. The wideband could be right if you're not running stock injectors. so dont assume its wrong.. yet.

EDIT: sorry didnt see your last post.. Don't quote me on the injector modification thing.. because I've never heard of that.. but no there is not a valve on the line.. you can get a FP tester with a gauge on it from just about any parts store.. or just get a AFPR because you're guoing to need one anyway for your 20g's correct supporting mods
 
i have a fuel pressure tester, but it needs a valve to connect to, i dont see one on the car. it would look like a bike tube valve. or is there another method?

and ya, im at 10psi right now. and good thinking ill keep away from wot untill i sort this out.

I wouln't be worried about the ECU either. Post a pic of one of the injectors and the serial on it.. calibrate your WB. Do you have anything to make a datalog with? Wouldn't hurt to check out your fuel pump and see what that is. Just for knowing's sake.

and I hear there is a way to T in to check fuel press., but I think you'd have to search for a how to or something on here. I've never done it.

If you just get an AFPR you can disconnect the vac house and plug it while it idles and set your base fuel press to spec and reconnect the vac hose.. call it day and never worry about it again.

AFPRs are easy to install.. not the cheapest @ $100+ but much needed when getting bigger and bolder mods.
 
ya i had one on my cobra, ill look into that. getting this thing road worthy has almost eaten my entire budget im running out of funds for upgrads. ill keep you all posted as i find out more.
