I have a fresh engine with 4K miles and EVO III with 4K miles. NO balance shafts and of course all new seals and gaskets.

Recentlly the car has been give me puffs of oil smoke at idle. It's oil and goes away with driving. I have had serveral people follow me and watch for it when driving and they all report it goes away. So the consesnous is that myabe the EVO III is getting to much oil pressure at idle. My oil pressure is super high now compared to before the new engine.

Idle Oil Pressure

L--------|---Half-----------H

Driving Oil Pressure

L-----------Half-------|----H

I double check compression.

160-160-160-160 so it's not getting by the rings as it looks like they seated just fine. I pull 22 for vacum as well.

The consensous seems to be that I need an Oil restrictor in the feed line. Has nayone else had this issue?

If you had too much oil pressure at the turbo, you would get smoke (lots of it) at WOT or whenever you built boost. You would not get smoke upon start-up or idle. The b-shaft removal more than likely is what's causing the high oil pressure. I dont think it has anything to do with the turbo though. What kind of condition is the head in? Are you running a cat? Is it smoke from burning oil or unburnt fuel....?

Oil level is correct. :)

Head has new valve stem seals. Three Angle vavle job, decked, hottanked, valves check for straightness. Head is perfect and so is block. I leaks nowhere.

There is a cat on the car which should be gone shortlly. I thought it was unburnt fuel at first but it sure smells like oil and has a blue tint to it. My coolant level stays the same and latelly my Oil level has been staying the same, so maybe it is fuel. I'd just like to figure it out because an engine and turbo with 4K shouldn't smoke at idle.

wow, i've never heard anyone complain about having GOOD oil pressure LOL...

I think you're fine, you're not even running past the H mark. If I were you i'd be damn happy.

Sorry I think I came off wrong. I am in no way complaing about the sweet oil pressure. I love that and expected it after taking the BS's out and instaling the block of bearings. :thumb:

I'm just trying to get to the bottom of this smoke at idle crap. The turbo is still fine 0 shaft play. No oil in charge pipes, compression great ,no oil leaks, spotless engine bay and car but it smokes. It's not right and I just want to make it right.

this is what I asked 3 weeks ago.hmmmm sounds like same problem.
I rebuilt my 7 bolt and finally got it put back in ..Changed oil after several heat cycles just to be safe.Motor gets ran at between 6000-7200 rpms for about 15 minutes during a normal race..Lost oil pressure second night out with this motor...Tore motor down and oil pan was full of gold color shavings which are the mains.. Looked at oil filter and found out that the metal lining on the inside was all sucked (FRAM OIL FILTER) in like the inside of the filter was crushed (checked filter before install )... I have ran these motor stock for awhile under these conditions and everything goes great.. I run 10/30 oil in it and reads 60 psi at start up and I know 100 at 3grand but not quite sure about when it is warm.. Can I be getting too much oil pressure and oil filter cannot keep up ???

Balance shafts were removed and bearings installed backwards to block oil holes
New oil pump was installed pretty much everything stock components

Just a month ago I would've never taken that filter issue seriously, but rather odd and similar thing happened to me too.

I had that FRAM toughguard filter (the one with a by-pass I believe), and once, all of a sudden I started getting only about a quater of oil pressure that I had before. It would also vary greatly on the freeway. Came home, took the filter off, sawed it in half. Didn't find any shavings, but mesh did look warped and safety bypass shut... Replaced the filter and ran perfect ever since...

Go to Mitsu and get the OEM filter. It will look weird but it is the best thing for the car. It's the same one from the EVO 8.

Seriouslly though FRAM is crap. Your car will be happeir with an OEM filter.

use a amsoil filter

That was the same one I used..I figured since it was a fresh motor I would treat it to a better filter guess that was a mistake... i feel better now knowing once I get it back together I should be ok..

I assume that you are still taking the oil supply to the turbo from the head and not the oil filter housing since you have a 1G. Is that correct?

That is correct. The feed line comes from the head and all stock lines are being used.

id say all aftermarket oil filters are not worth it. the one thing mitsu did right was make a good oil filter ;)

Oil level staying the same? If it's burning it, it has to get lower.

How does your oil return tube look?

Any blockage, even minute, can cause a turbo to smoke.

The return line is free of and blockage.

I also just double checked the trubo for shaft play. = none.

I'm still baffled in this. Comppresion is fine, no oil in intake charge pipes, oil lines fine, and turbo is fine. :( Damn you smoke damn you!

What kind of oil are you running? heavier oil might cause higher pressure. I would also maybe check fuel filter and try some seafoam, but im just guessing at these... Try 10w-30 synthentic if you arent already

10W-30 Mobile 1 Synth

Fuel Filter is brand new, don't know how that would make it burn oil though.

And Seafoam.. no thanks the engine has 4500 miles on it. It should have almost no build ups anywhere.

I'm going to try an oil feed resitrctor and see if that helps.

I dont think a restrictor is going to do you any good. You are using the stock line and as far as I know, it wont let you over-pressurize the turbo. The stock line acts as a restrictor itself. Plus, the pressure at the head is much lower as opposed to from the oil filter housing, so I highly doubt you are even close to a critically high pressure reading at the head. Plus if you were over-pressurizing the turbo, that would cause you to blow oil past the seals and into the IC piping. Then it would be combusted with fuel and air and then smoked out through the exhaust. You already said your pipes are oil free, so that would rule out the possibility of the problem being your turbo.

I suspect it is probably the oil, I think most start using synth around 5? 8? If your car only smokes when its on vacuum, it is probably the synth creeping past the rings. Does it smoke when you coast gears?

Does not smoke when coasting. Just at sitting idel.

Compression was 160 across as stated above. So compression should be ok.
