My girl was driving my car and barely made it home because it started overheating. I found that the thermostat was a 192 degree instead of the 180 degree that should have been in there. I replaced the t-stat and took it for a test drive. When I went to take off, it felt like the car was having problems in Drive. As I started down the road, the transmission did not shift at all and stayed in 2nd gear. By the time I got home, the temp gauge was going back up so I shut the car off again to let it cool down. With the key on, I checked the fans....they had power, but were not working. I will be replacing the fans with the thinner ones. I also checked the trans fluid when I cranked the car back up and it smelled burnt but it was still red. It looked overfull too. Do you think if I did a transmission service that it may fix the problem or could it be something else. I just recently put a new ECU in the car that came from a M/T AWD talon, but it ran perfectly when I put it in. It shifted fine with no problems at all. The transmission was rebuilt 2 years ago and got 500 miles put on it, then the timing jumped, and it sat for 2 years. I did not change the fluid like an idiot.

Sounds like she overheated the car real good and the transmission went into limp mode. Meaning it went into a 2nd gear lockout where that is the only gear you can use. If the car was overheating, the transmission fluid was probably overheating too since it's cooler is in the radiator. Get the system flushed if you can find a 1:1 exchange machine and disconnect your ground on the battery and see how it runs.

the trans cooler is not part of the radiator. It is in the front of the AC condenser. I cannot find anyone to flush the trans until Tuesday :( can I do it myself some how? Would the speed sensors have anything to do with the transmission not shifting?

I found the speed sensors at Orielly's but i cannot find where they go on the car?????? Still having problems with the temperature...i think. If i let the car idle, it goes up to half way. same goes with while I am driving it. If I turn the car off, then start it back up, the temp gauge goes back to normal where it is supposed to be. It has a brand new 180 degree t-stat in it, a new radiator, 30/70 coolant ratio, thin aftermarket radiator fan (fits snug against the fins...it does come on too), and a new water pump. since it is running so hot, would that cause the trans to go into limp mode? I am not even sure if that is my problem because when I took it for a test drive after I put the fan on it, the transmission was acting very strange. If i was easy on it, it would start out in 1st, go to 2nd, then try to jump back into 1st for a second. At one time, I was going 45mph and it up shifted on it's own as soon as I lifted off the gas. What the hell is wrong with my car?? :(

Ok...here we go again. I just read the codes for the transmission and I got some really weird crap.

L = +10 : Long meter swing
S = +1 : Short Meter Swing

1 : LSLL = 31
2 : SSSS = 4
3 : LLLL = 40
4 : SS = 2

There is no code 4 or 2 but that is what the meter read so I added the number before with the number after. The codes I think I got are 35 and 42. According to the code chart on plymouthlaser.com, those read :

Code 35 : there is nothing
Code 31 : Check Pulse Generator A or B???? what is that? where is it located?
Code 42 : Check Solenoid Valve Connector, Check Shift control solenoid valve A? what is that? where is it located?

I hate automatics, but my girl needs a car to drive so I really have to fix this fast. Please help me! I don't even know if I read the codes right.

ok, update again.....

the codes are 44 and 42.

It is the Shift Control Solenoids A and B.

What are those and where do I find them and how can I fix that?

They are right on top of the trans if this is a 1g. Not sure on the 2g. You can ohm them out and find the specs in a manual. Also check the tcu caps make sure they aren't leaking. I had the same codes with a tcu that was leaking.

I just found the TCU on my car and opened it up to see if anything was bad in it. It looks perfectly fine. No leaking caps.

My manual for my car is from my very first DSM 7 years ago. The book is falling apart. I have never owned an automatic DSM, and probably will never buy another automatic for the rest of my life. My girl just needs a car to get around in so I bought it for $300 not running.

I found in a thread on here that it could be the speed sensors too. Where are they on the transmission. I have been looking for a picture of them installed on a transmission, but I cannot find anything. Orielly's has them for $16 a piece, but I don't know where to install them on my transmission. Does mine even have speed sensors?

I just finished changing the fluid in the trans, and put in a new filter. The car seemed to shift fine now, but........ Going down the interstate at a steady speed, the transmission wanted to upshift on it's own? WTF is up with that? What would cause that and how do I fix it?

I also noticed that if I turn my cruise control on, the tachometer and the temp gauge both stop working for a second. If I brush my foot up against the fuse box area, it will start working again. I have not pulled it out yet to check the connections or for loose or broken wires. I would not even know where to start. :( Sometimes the cruise works, sometimes it doesn't.

Im here a few days late but this was my exact problem a few months ago. Was told it was limp but could find out what to do to get it out (i tried to reset system) after all failing changed tranny, but it was the wrong 1, so I know have a turbo car. Ended up changing tranny, motor, tcu, ecu front wiring harness, axles. Thank god for donor cars. But please let me know if you get it fixed as I have the old setup sittin in my garage.
