i wanted to tint my sunroof to cut down on the glare on my screen but the shop told me that i shouldn't use window tint b/c the inside of the glass is rigid and it wouldn't stick well. could i use vht nite shades with some clear coat? i have some black duplicolor acrylic laquer that i could use also. not really conscerned with being able to see out of it, just want to reduce the amount of sunlight coming through. any suggestions?

I honestly have no idea what this guy is talking about. I, along with everyone that I know that has tinted windows has their sunroof tinted. It "sticks" just as well, and there are no bubbles, or anything like that. I would go to another shop if I were you.

My sunroof came from the factory with tint. Whoever told you that you can't tint your sunroof is a moron. WTF

As opposed to the floppy, soft glass used on the hatch and side windows

by rigid i mean it has what the guy called "dots" on the bottom of the sunroof which would make it hard for the film to stick to it. have now been to three shops and all say the same thing. maybe painting isn't a bad idea after all ...

I tinted mine and it was fine. Maybe your sun roof is different for some reason, was it ever replaced? Do you have a pic?

sounds like you have a messed up sunroof then. Mines smooth...like glass WTF

it's not the factory sunroof so that probably has something to do with it. it's just very un-smooth

You could always tint the outside of the sunroof, but I'm not sure if the weather would ruin it.

I went to another shop today and they told they don't tint sunroofs because they can get too hot and crack. i looked at the guy funny and walked out. these shots might help a little in showing the "bumps". the third pic is a close up so you can see the texture

You could always try the tint shades but it may be hard to get a nice even coat. I can see why it would be a pain to tint that shit :barf:

get some tint, and try it yourself. its flat and will be pretty easy. You'll need a heat gun. Make sure you don't get autozone or walmart tint, those don't stretch.

So go into a tint place and TELL them to tint it. Don't ask, TELL. Just make it clear that you want it done, you're not concerned about the little bumps, and if it doesn't last it's not their fault.

The windows on my 97 Cutlass have those bumps at the top of them and I had my window tinted with 5% tint. You can see some little discoloration spots around the bumps where they hold the water but it sill looks fine. No-one will even notice on a sunroof. I say go for the tint.

So do the rear quarter windows (`tween b and c pillars)

It is just a pain to do since you have to get the film to stick between the dots by usuing a heat gun (and it has to be GOOD film).

hOwever I don't know where that sunroof came from... mine is tinted glass not bumpy like that...

I guess you can jsut leave it closed all summer...

Mines not tinted yet since I am about to go 20% all around, and clear heat film on hte windshield if I can find it.

Or replace the glass. Any idea who's sunroof it is, who made it?
yea just go into a glass shop they should be able to replace the glass and tint it at the same time, just save ur bumpy one if the new one ever cracks

A few years ago when I had my 92 Eclipse, I went to a tint shop to put tint on my sunroof and the guy said that sunroofs get hot and crack with tint on it. He said he could put it on there, but IF the sunroof cracks he won't be responsible for it.

I'd say go to a glass shop and get tinted glass to replace that glass. :thumb:

Just a question to everyone - can't he use the tail light lens spray on the sunroof??

Im pretty sure that all factory-"tinted" glass (like rear 3 windows on trucks, sunroofs, blue strip on top of windshields, etc) is actually dipped or something, its not a regular tint film. Which might explain why the sunroof would crack with tint film but doesn't crack with factory "tint".

i think replacing and tinting the glass would cost much more than using something like niteshades. the original goal was to either darken or black-out the sunroof. just wondering is anybody has tried paint or niteshades on a sunroof and, if so, how did it come out?
