regina,
Hi there i have a 1991 Plymouth Laser RS Turbo. Its a 5 speed standard all stock except for a K&N air filter and a 3 inch down pipe. I was coming home from work and the road i take says to do 70 kph i was in the middle of shifting from 3rd to 4th when my car made a funny noise and stalled out. I coasted around the corner and opened the hood to find the timing belt had been chewed up pretty bad. The car was towed home now i know these cars depend on the timing belt to run everything but if the belt goes can the motor still be saved if so what do i have to do. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated as i love this car its the best car i have ever owned. I should also mention that there was no fluids leaking out of the car and it is acting like its seized up.

well started the tear down don't have pics uploaded yet but the cam cover is off without taking off the head yet 4 valves are bent on the exhaust side of the motor. the intake side all looks good turned the cams all valves working proper. waiting for good weather LOL i don't have a garage so this is all happening outside in front of my house. got a new belt and belt kit complete with tension'er and idler pulleys. waiting on word of a parts car before i take off the head may be able just to swap them heads. will have pics uploaded soon hopefully

the head is off i got lucky i think all the exhaust valves are done not a mark on the pistons tho. i guy i know had got his talon written off due to an accident with a drunk driver so i got a new head for cheap instead of replacing the valves. everything is back together and all that is left is to put it back into the car and install the new timing belt hopefully it doesn't snow

First do you have any pics because...

It all depends if the and if you said the belt is badly chewed up you might have some rebuilding to do. If the belt is chewed up that means probably that the crankshaft spun more than your camshafts and that leads to severe cylinder head and valves damage you are going to have to check all that out before installing a new bell, you might have been lucky and nothing like that happened but I doubt it Good luck.
What happens if a timing chain or belt fails?

A: The engine stops running. If the cam drive fails, the camshaft stops turning, the valves stop opening, and the engine stops breathing. The engine will stop and will not run because it has no compression.

A timing belt or chain failure can cause expensive damage in ?interference? engines that don?t have enough clearance to prevent the valves from hitting the pistons if the cam stops turning or jumps out of time. Interference engines include most Acura, Honda, Hyundai, Infiniti, Isuzu, Nissan and Porsche engines, also some Audi, BMW, Mazda, Mitsubishi and VW engines, as well as Chevrolet 1.5L and 3.4L, 1995 and newer Chrysler 2.0L and 2.5L, 1997 and newer Chrysler 3.2Land 3.5L, and Ford Probe 2.0L and 2.2L engines.

A timing chain or belt may also jump time if it is loose. The engine may continue to run but will experience a loss of performance because of the altered valve timing.

before you buy anything you need to tear it down. Take the head off so you can inspect everything. Rotate the cams and check for valve travel, inspect the piston for impact damage. I would actually recommend doing a leak down, not compression check as well.

good luck and as you tear it down share pics so we can try to help you out. Hopefully damage is minimal and you can get away with just buying a used head.
