London,
Well i had my 90 Plymouth Laser Non Turbo (16v DOHC) Running good and I let my good buddy drive us home and at 130km/h he went to put it in forth and hit second and let the clutch out. Well the wheels seized and all you could hear was popping noises from the engine. You could smell the burnt smoke, I dunno if it was the tires or not but within the second it all happened he threw it in Neutral and we just coasted as far as we could. I took the timing belt upper cover off and the belt is still in tact, so I was woundering what all could of happened, could the timming belt of jumped since there is some scrctches on it, and if it did am I looking at replacing all the valves?? I am kinda new to all of this and if anyone has any Ideas then I would love to hear from you. I'll post pics once I get the engine apart if needed! The car has 242,000 kms on it, I wounder if its worth fixing!

I should also mention that there is no oil leaking ot coolant, I figured I should point that out. When I tried to turn it over the engine made a popping noise out the tail pipe so I think there is still compression but as I said I'm still kinda new to all of this.

It could be a number of things. A little better explanation of the sound the car is making would help. One thing you can check easily is to take the timing cover off the top of the motor and check to see if the cams still line up properly, then check your crank to see if that is still aligned properly. This will tell you if your timing jumped. My talon has jumped time before and i was lucky enough to not bend any valves.

The sound you are hearing, is it a metal knocking sound or does it sound like the engine is backfiring?

Well the Cams did line up, I found that the balance shatft belt broke and the timing belt was good a little scrapped... We replaced the timing belt and balance shaft belt.. turn it iver and no go all you hear is the starter spinning, the cams turn and the engine backfired, so we took the valve cover off and pulled all the intake rocker's out. The balance shaft belt must of made the timing belt slip and the pistons smashed out the intake valves.. Tommorrow we take the head off... I was woundering if anyone knew where to get a bebuilt head at a good price, either that or just let my buddy throw one in from the wreckers, he smashed them so I doubt he'll pay for a rebuild since the car does have 243,000 Kms. So is there anything else I should look for before putting the new head on? any suggestions?

I'd be worried about bearing damage. At the very least drain the oil and look for metal shavings in it. If it were me, i'd pull the pan and take a real good look. Hopefully bent valves are the worst of your damages, but its worth taking the extra time now to be sure :thumb: .

This is who i got my head from. Very fast shipping, and no core charge. They include a label for return shipping.

I paid 280 shipped for my head. Brand new valves, guides, seals, and resurfaced. Hell of a deal if you ask me.

Ohh, I more than worried about bearing dammage, I'll mention it to him, It's in his dad's driveway so I hope he'll go for it! Thankx for that tip tdbill, I should also mention that what I ment by pulled the intake rocker's out it was because they smashed off and were laying everywhere, Lots of scrapes.. And Tom 04841, where did you get your head from again, it didn't show in the response.

Thanks again guys!

Mike
