I was driving my talon home the other day and my temp guage went ALL the way to hot, the hottest it could get. So i slowed down n shut it off. Couldnt clearly see anything under the hood. I waited started it back up. It was still very hot, about 3/4 the way up. i started driving home and then guage suddenly dropped down to reg temp area. It did this about 3 other times testing it. Now 3 days later after not driving it. It has a crackeling noise right by the head gasket, its trying really hard to start and barely running. The idle isnt consistant. The motor has 164,000 miles on it. Its been goin hard. Could i have blown my motor when it overheated THAT HIGH? The day it overheated it was running alot better then it is now. all help is welcome, thanks.

Compression test and have you checked your spark plugs.

If you dont have a compression tool pull the spark plugs and see what they look like. Most likely you will find one that is very different in appearance from the others. Take a pic or two of that one and post it, that will go a long way in diagnosing the problem.

I had the same type of thing happen with my 2g at 147,000 miles. My problem was I was running too lean and too hot, melted a spark plug and shattered a piston. If you pull a spark plug and one is MELTED well then you know you have problems

Chances are its a blown head gasket. Do a compression test and see what the results. If you come to the conclusion that it is the gasket. Go ahead and remove the head(if your doing the work yourself). Then inspect the block and see if you can see any cracks or if your pistons are ok. I would then get the head milled and then reinstall it.

On my 90 gsx it overheated an melted the cheesy autozone sparkplug wires. Look at those and see it the bases almost to the bottom of where they go into your engine and see if any are melted. That is why mine would not start.

Ok im gonna try the compression test and check my plugs tomorrow, by the way my car constantly fouls plugs, theyre probably beyond fouled right now. I have a small crack in my valve cover which leaks all over the cover. if thats even doing it?

And my gas mileage is ridiculous, i bet im getting 5mpg. Any ideas on that? anyhow, if something is wrong with the pistons, wall, or anything like that. Do you think i should save the trouble and buy a full new engine? Perhaps the JDM evo III.

For the bad fuel mileage, I would suggest new o2 sensors. Or even check to make sure your air filter is clean.

Chances are you blew a head gasket.

If you remove the head make sure before you put it all back together. Make sure to check the deck and the head for straitness. With the high Temp the head could be warped.

As stated above always a good idea to have the head milled when it is off to have proper seal.

what ya hear in the video is a rod bearing knocking. That has nothing ot do with the head gasket. Unless you run it with no oil...

when you say that the temp was all the way up to about 3/4 and then dropped back down, did that happen right away?? if it did, you might want to start by replacing the coolant temp sensor. that can cause the car to run rich or lean and cause the bad running condition, ive run into that before a couple of times. that also might account for your gas mileage issue. i could be wrong though.

Wow! I was looking for something on the forums about this cause i have the same problem! I was driving down the highway goin about 80 when I went to downshift from 5th to 4th but inbetween shifts the car stalled and when I jamed it into 4th it made this big boom sound (im guessing from the motor jumping to a start). after that i had this ticking/grinding sound that goes faster and lower with the rpm's. I aslo noticed that im blowing blue smoke out the back end now....=(. Is it the same thing?

I thought about it being the coolant temp alot. That would explain the bubbling in the rad, the over heat, and foul my plugs causing it to run horibble. Im not gonna bother to fix it this time, im bringing it in to a local shop to get all fixed up. could running fouled ass plugs for about 2 months do this? Cause overheat? It felt like week by week i lost more and more power. Like a loss of compression, i barley have any response on my pedal below 4 rpms too. I apreciate all the help. Im just going crazy waiting to get this thing fixed. Ill post up what went wrong when i find out.

Well i finnaly got my car to the shop. Turns out it was the head gasket, it had a small leak. As of now my head is out getting milled. Thanks for all the help everyone.
