Getting ready to put the head back on my car, but I'm still confused about some timing things.

I seem to not have turned my engine to TDC when I took the head off. #1 and #4 pistons are about 1/2" from the top. Should I rotate the crank until I find TDC?

I installed new cams, so I put the timing marks on the cam sprockets pointed towards each other in the middle right? What is weird is I swear the timing marks were pointed straight up when I took the head off. I think I screwed something up along the way.

Thanks

Its been a little bit since i last did my cams and timing belt, so let me think back. With the head still off the block rotate the engine clockwise till piston number 1 is at tdc. The cams should be installed with the dowel pins facing up and the timing marks facing each other in the middle. When you took the head off you might of not had piston number 1 a tdc, that would have messed up the timing marks like you stated. I hope that helps.

I know what tdc is but how do you tell that it's tdc while the cylinder head is on the car.

Align the crank mark with the mark on the oil pump housing. Another way is to put a screwdriver down the #1 spark plug hole, when it reaches maximum height, that is TDC.

LocknessMonster has it right. Simply spin the crank over to TDC and then install the head with the dowel pins facing up and the two timing marks in the middle facing each other. Just double check everything once you have it together. You should be fine.
